One of my information sources on certain topics has been the Wikipedia for many years. However, today when accessing this one, I found a new almost unreadable format, unless you have a microscope or at least a magnifying glass..
Today wikipedia is unreadable and unhealthy, since it requires a considerable viewing effort from the users. It can be argued that I may always increase the letter size by pressing CTRL + plus in my browser. But, why should I waste my time doing this each... It can be argued that I may always increase the letter size by pressing CTRL + plus in my browser. But, why should I waste my time doing this each time I need to see something?. You could do that (ignore Wikipedia in the future), or you could register at Wikipedia and get the old format back.

You seem to say that the font is now smaller. It seems the same size to me as it's always been. Could it be a problem with your browser? I'm using Opera 10.x on Windows XP.

no, it wasn't a problem with my Firefox 3.6.3 browser. Maybe the changes they have made were country specific, but I am not alone. You may read more here and at the next topics about the new Wikipedia's microscopic font size.

first of all, many thanks for all your helpful tips ans specially to Katerina. I have set up a readable font size now on my Firefox browser , but I guess I will go back to the older wikipedia format. Have a nice weekend!

Even though forum postings have a less than optimal text width? Typographically, optimal text width is accepted as 55-65 characters. The reason behind this? You can keep both head and eyes still while reading without the font size having to be reduced to unreadability.
Now, count the characters in these forum postings (whilst moving your head/eyes) and weep/cry.

Nobody and nothing is perfect, but this resource is of some value... I hope you will have a rest during he weekend and then you will use you flexibility of mind and get accustomed or customize...

On my browser I didn't note any change in that regard. But it lets me set a minimum font size for all sites. Check out this config option. I don't use Firefox, but I have it installed, and the option is there under Content | Fonts & Colors | Advanced

Maybe it's system specific. I've seen one or two screenshots of the new layout, and the font on it appears to be an anti-aliased font. I don't use anti-aliased fonts in any of my programs. Perhaps the Wikipedia CSS's fall-back font is bigger than its primary one.

By the way, here is a screenshot taken by Wikipedia staff to show what it looks like in their browsers:

The font on the screenshot doesn't look particularly small to me. In fact, to my eyes, all the letters look like they're in semi-bold font and there's too little white space on the page (but that's what you get when you use anti-aliased fonts). Here's what the main page looks like on my computer:

I counted. 79 characters. And I don't move my head.
Only 79, you may ask? Well, you can increase the number of characters by increasing the width of your browser (or, you can maximise your browser, if you have a wide screen). I don't use my browser maximised -- I have a 1400x1050 screen but my browser window is only 1000x700. Here's what it looks like for me:

What does the ProZ.com forum look like for you? Oh, and how far is your head from your screen? My screen is so far from my head that if I stretch out my arm fully, and make a fist, my fist doesn't touch the screen. And I'm not far-sighted. If you don't like moving your head from side to side while reading the forum posts, perhaps you should move back a little...?
