Matecat is open source but the public online version of it uses a closed-source proprietary version of it. The public online version is free to use.

Memsouce's "personal" version is free, but you're limited to two files simultaneously. And you can edit Memsource's own XLIFF files in the offline Memsource editor, which is free.

Some paid CAT tools have demo limitations that allow you to use it indefinitely. Wordfast Pro's limit is 500 segments in the TM, I believe. Some of the older versions of MemoQ reverted to a free version after the trial period (I can't remember which older versions did this), and I seem to recall the limit was one document per project.

I've been very happy with SmartCat, it offers nearly all the essential features you get in a paid tool and the paid version is affordable.
