It was a loan officer for a bank who needed some German records translated so that his client could qualify for a loan. He'd never hired a translator before, and actually offered to pay in advance. (Sweet, but not very practical, since I was working from hard copies.) I dropped off the translation, and he paid on the spot.
Of course, this has never happened since.
Although I have one regular client who pays the same day, and one who pays within 5 days.

Due to time zone difference, an invoice issued in the wee hours of the morning at the client's request was paid for just before midnight of the day before date of invoice.

In memoriam
Some clients arrive at my door with personal documents to be translated. That I charge for up front. When I give them the price, they whip out their wallet and pay right away.

One or two clients of mine come for the translation and the invoice -to my office!- and pay me right there, no questions asked, in cash ! Wuauw!

This client was entirely new to me, though he came to me through ProZ. This is a good sign, but I was a bit nervous since I could not find his name in ProZ directory, so I asked advance payment.
He immediately send money to my Pay Pal account well before the job was submitted.

The fastest for me is within minutes, through Paypal.
Of course I also have one who pays within 60 days, but it's a regular, high-volume, and dependable job so I dont' complain.

Yes, if we count cases like that, then my fatest payments are also immediate. The fastest that I've received "sent" money was within minutes. It was for a very large project, and the deal was that I wouldn't deliver the second third until the first was paid for. Upon receipt of the first installment, the client sent me payment via Paypal or Moneybookers, I forget which. Come to think of it, I've had similar experiences with other large projects as well.
