This question does not sound like real English. Oct 19, 2007

I think the poster means give up. The verb renounce in English exists but is used in other situations.

I manage to somehow balance everything but not every day Oct 19, 2007

I agree with "None".

But probably on Monday career leaves way to everything else.

On Tuesday, family has to leave more space to career and to everything else.

And then on Wednesday love has little space to express itself.

On Thursday it's friends you can't see or talk with.

At the end of the week, if you sum it up, all these fundamental elements of my life have probably found some space and the balance is quite satisfactory. Or sometimes the balance is not within a week, but in the month.

The important thing is that they are all there, because it is the presence of all these elements that gives sense to the others.

Friendship Oct 19, 2007

Because the question says: "If you had to"?

For me, it's not a hypothetical situation. I've already gradually renounced the friends I had and not been making any REAL new ones.
I do meet one or two of my old friends once a year when I'm on holidays in Egypt, but I wouldn't call that friendship anymore.
Family is top of my list now, and I don't feel I have the time or the need for friends anymore.

If I had to... Oct 19, 2007

It would definitely be things like mundane things, or consumerism-related stuff that I would give up... if I had to.
I wouldn't give up anything else in the list proposed: it just doesn't make sense to me right now.

Friends come, friends go Oct 19, 2007

... and friends sometimes disappear just when you really need them. On the other hand, family are (almost) always there for you, through thick and thin.

I voted for giving up friends as they've never been a major part of my life. Love, family and career are much more basic needs, and personal interests, too, by the time you reach my age, have become rather fundamental.

Personal interests Oct 19, 2007

The things from the list, that concern myself as a male translator, are friendship and personal interests. I guess, reasonable choice would be when one renounces a thing for the sake of another thing. So, if I had to, I would replace one interest with another.

Just for a while.... Oct 20, 2007

When I decided to be a mom, it was my personal decision to leave my career aside to give all my attention and love to my little girls.

Yes, I did have to start again, yes, I had to actualize myself in a record time, yes I am still overwhelmed of what's new in the translation world... but you know what? I don't change that 4 fantastic years I spent with my princesses, I didn't miss a single thing of their first years.

I would do that again... at the end I realized that

I would do that again... at the end I realized that my career was always there, just waiting for me to look for it and take it again. Of course that now it has to share the attention with two more kids (and sometimes they win ;o) )

We cannot Oct 20, 2007

We cannot renounce any of those things, for it would be the same as renouncing freedom and life itself.

Why even ask such questions?

Personal interests Oct 20, 2007

I have done so in the past and probably would continue doing it in the future.
For example, my favorite hobby, reading novels, has been replaced with job-related texts.

Depending on the situation, we tend to give more space to some things than to others. Just this week, I have had to "sacrifice" to take my mom to the hospital every day.

Dear Henry, I may be wrong, but I do believe that nobody can always have it all, don't you think? I think that one must have priorities in one's life, unfortunately...
Why ask such a question? I was just curious, that's all!
