Quite apart from the fact that stuff accumulates (and stuff includes items of furniture) all by itself, and layout therefore needs to be re-thought every so often, I am convinced that turning the desk in another direction and/or rearranging the furniture always makes you feel you've gained some space! Nothing scientific in this, but do try it! (You'll also save on buying your next box of paper clips).

A couple of years ago I installed a proper office in one of the bedrooms, with plenty of cupboard space. Even so, my desk is cluttered, which simply means I'm not very good at tidying up and archiving.

After spending years in a cubbyhole area between the bedrooms, I finally took over one of the bedrooms my children have vacated and now have a completely furnished, air conditioned office with a view, PC and two monitors, laptop, wireless internet, plenty of shelves, and room to expand. Unfortunately, I have spent 4 of the past six months taking care of ailing parents in the US and am currently back to laptop on the dining room table and inkjet printer on the chair next to me.

See more After spending years in a cubbyhole area between the bedrooms, I finally took over one of the bedrooms my children have vacated and now have a completely furnished, air conditioned office with a view, PC and two monitors, laptop, wireless internet, plenty of shelves, and room to expand. Unfortunately, I have spent 4 of the past six months taking care of ailing parents in the US and am currently back to laptop on the dining room table and inkjet printer on the chair next to me.

That gives me hope Melanie. My "office" could be described as a cubbyhole too. It's just big enough to fit my desk and a wardrobe. I think the builders of the flat we live in included it in case there was a midget in the family
The only modifications I can consider making are dusting (once a week), turning the page on the desk calendar (once a month) and thinking about painting it a different color (once a year). Mind you, I said "thinking about".

I do like to change things round a bit, though.
My computer desk and computer obviously have to be against the wall where the telephone connection is. Since the ink jet printer and the laser printer/photocopier/scanner are connected to it, they all have to be arranged around it, too! What I am not happy about is that flimsy table which I made back in 2005, which until recently had a quite small, lightweight laser printer standing on it, having to take the 42 kg/77 lbs weight of the ... However, at that weight, it is not easy to move, even for two people! I want it to stand on the floor (it is just about big enough for that), and then I will put the table in the only remaining place in the office where I could stand it, which means I need another, smaller table (first) to stand the computer on. At the moment, the computer itself is standing on the flimsy table, together with the new heavyweight piece of equipment. My working table contains the monitor, keyboard, and inkjet printer to the right.
I have a huge proofreading table, that stands in the only place where it gets light from both windows (which are diagonally opposite each other). The table is so big, because somebody I know offered to give me an old table, when I set up my office here, and then delivered me simply a large plank of wood. He explained that, at his house, it had been used as a table, resting loosely on a couple of sets of drawers. I bought it four stout legs (tree-trunk shape). This table takes up the entire second wall.
The third wall contains a bookcase and a window. The flimsy table could be moved to stand under that window. The fourth wall has filing cabinets all along it.
I cannot really move any furniture, but can only juggle around the various small items that stand on top of the furniture - which I do from time to time, when I dust.

I dream of the day when I actually get to turn a whole room into an office just for myself. I'm soon moving house and thought I would actually get to do it but I've ended up renting a smaller flat than what I had hoped for... Maybe someday??
P.S. I turn the page on the calendar once a month too.

My office is a former boxroom and my furniture is shoehorned into position, so there's absolutely no scope for manoeuvre. When I bought this house, one of the conditions was that my office furniture had to fit (which it did with cm to spare!). I then had the door changed round to open outwards onto an otherwise unused corner of the landing, thus gaining valuable space, and had a joiner in to extend worktops and shelves into the corner, so the whole thing looks made-to-measure.
