Frankly, if it brought in even half what I can earn from working with languages, I'd far rather be out walking in the mountains! And, if I limit my thoughts to language-related activities, then - like Fiamma - I'd rather be writing my own stuff (I have a book in the planning stages ...) rather than trying to make sense of other peoples' drivel! If I would have a luxurity to choose what I want to do it would be writing, making wonderful creations using graphic design programs and translating movies. Currently Im blessed to do 2 of these things, but to do all 3 would be just amazing (even better if I wouldnt care of how much I earn doing that).

Which is of course what I do. Second choice is conference interpreting, which I also do on occasion. It provides a welcome change of pace now and then, although I would not like to interpret as a full-time activity. As far as the rest of the choices are concerned, forget it! | | | Henry Hinds 美国 Local time: 03:08 English英语译成Spanish西班牙语 + ... 纪念

The asker is assuming that income would be equal so as to leave that out of the equation and just test our preferences. It does not appear that income has to be different in terms of production/time spent, but one's overall income could be different. Income can depend on the rates you can command due to your skill level, your clients and the market in which you operate. It can vary quite a bit depending on the demand for your services in any particular activity. For instance, I have mentioned that I mostly translate, but at times I also do conference interpreting. Both pay about the same in terms of production/time spent, but there is no potential for working full-time every week on conference interpreting, it just does not come along that often. Translations come in all the time. ▲ Collapse | | | neilmac 西班牙 Local time: 11:08 Spanish西班牙语译成English英语 + ...
I like doing what I do ... but I don't know what "localization" is, can anybody explain it to me briefly?

If it paid me the same as translating, I would work as a ski instructor in Cypress Mountain, near Vancouver, BC. I had lots of fun there, but money wise it was the worst job! Have a fun weekend everybody Rufino | | | Localization | Jun 15, 2007 |
neilmac wrote: I like doing what I do ... but I don't know what "localization" is, can anybody explain it to me briefly? Taking a text that is already in the target language and tweaking it to make it fit a specific country or region. I'm sure someone can give a better definition, but you wanted it brief! | | | Interpretating | Jun 16, 2007 |
I've always regretted not having decided on becoming an interpreter/translator. As some of my professors say, I am really skilled in that area. I love both fields and could have combined them; however, I suddenly became a university professor/translator. Now, I can rarely do some interpretaion. | | | John Cutler 西班牙 Local time: 11:08 Spanish西班牙语译成English英语 + ...
I'm in the, currently, 12% who would like to do more proofreading, but since the pay's lousy and all things are not equal, I stick mostly with translating.

I would prefer to do interpreting if I did not have translation work. The little interpreting that I have done I have enjoyed, but then I am qualified as a translator and not an interpreter and so I would not market myself as an interpreter. If there was no translation work and I had the money, I would then train to be an interpreter. If there was no translation work and I had the money, I would then train to be an interpreter. I am pleased to see that some people like the idea of proofreading, because when work really piles up or there is an emergency, i.e. illness or something like that, I do pay people to proofread my work. Occasionally I am asked to proofread and sometimes I like it - it very much depends on who I am proofreading for. Sometimes I learn a lot through proofreading, and that is great. At other times, I find proofreading extremely frustrating because I have felt that I could have translated the text better myself. That is the reason why proofreading is not my first choice. ▲ Collapse | | | Melzie Local time: 11:08 French法语译成English英语 + ...

MediaMatrix I only really voted other because I'm in the middle of trying to make into English what could be a really pleasant audioguide if it hadn't been written by the person it was written by. You see, it's even rubbing off on me. Normally, I really love the translations I do but this takes the buscuit, and it's the weekend too.... | | | "Other" and an observation about the "writing" choice... | Jun 16, 2007 |
Hi, I noticed that, so far, from all the people who have posted an answer here, 3 chose "writing". I myself were a bit tempted to choose "writing", because obviously any good translator needs to be a good "writer", not necessarily in the sense of being a "fiction" writer, but rather in the sense of writing 100% correctly (or at least aiming at this). In another poll which was recently posted ( http://www.proz.com/topic/74188 ), one of the options I proposed about why people choose to participate in the Proz.com forums was "I like writing" and, funny enough, only 2% chose this option. So I wonder how many Proz.com translators are actually "potential" writers of fiction. There are many wonderful examples of translators who have become famous fiction writers, from James Joyce to Julio Cortázar, so to those fellow translators who have chosen "writing", don't give up, it is most likely not an impossible choice. On the other hand, I chose "other". I would prefer to be a millionaire and not have to do any "formal" work for a living and live la dolce vita. Of course, I mean an "instant" millionaire, like from having won the lottery (but I better get around buying those lottery tickets...). But actually, I really really enjoy translating. It can be a really creative job, in spite of the sometimes repetitive technical cycles.... Best, Ivette P.S.: to Neilmac, here is a link from the Wikipedia about "localization and internationalization": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internationalization_and_localization
