Funny thing. I was looking for info on an old employer of mine, and Google returned what seemed like my résumé in a German site. The familiar phrase "Wrote menu-driven accounting programs" (quotes must be included) prompted me to follow the link. Lo and behold, a partial CV of mine was being displayed at this agency's website.

I did email them my CV back in February, 2003, and filled two forms they sent me—one for things like what software I use, daily productivity and dictionaries; the other with fields of specialization. Only my CV contained the phrase in question.
I did not hear back from them at all, until June, 2005, when they requested a quotation, which I provided.
Finally, in November, 2007 they requested a second quotation, which I declined to provide. In fact, I did not even answer.
So here you have a strange issue—I'm good enough to flaunt, but too expensive to work for them?

Indeed, this looks like malpractice. But it is also possible that they made a mistake. You should definitely ask them to remove the data..... AND post a BlueBoard entry describing the situation.

By law in Europe you can request they remove all copy of your records from their databases, send them an email and if they take no notice, contact the German Data protection Agency, they will then make sure they remove it and they may even fine them for not having removed it when you requested.

They are allowed to keep the data you sent them. They are not allowed to publish them without your consent.
You are entitled to sue them.

Contact the agency immediately and follow the advice Alex and Tomas gave you. I suggest you remain polite; there's a (slim) chance there was some kind of a misunderstanding involved.
We translators seem to be particularly vulnerable to various forms of identity theft (sadly, I know what I'm talking about) and it sure looks we'll have to become a lot more careful with our CVs and contact data. The same happened to me (more than once), that is why I never send my CV. I am more than willing to send testimonials and references from my clients but not my CV!

Recently, I searched for myself on the Web to check if my identity is safe and sound. I didn't come across my CV (I removed it from my profile years ago). But I did find one of the articles I wrote for the knowledge base on ProZ, reproduced in its entirety on an Asian translator's website. There was actually a lot of stuff from various websites, of which I guess they were also posted without consent. The funniest thing is that the article in question is copyright ProZ. I also wrote to the website in question to just let them know that, even though I don't hold the copyright anymore, I found it very dishonest that they were generating traffic to their website with content created by someone whom they don't even know. If anything, the article should generate traffic to MY profile, not their website. I told them all this after they said to me that I shouldn't worry since my name was displayed on their site along with the article. Say what?
I recommend to all of you to regularly monitor your name on the Web. It's pretty much all you can do. ▲ Collapse
