My parents, their whole generation, treadmilled away the best years of their lives toiling in factories for shoddy paypackets. A life of drudgery, of deformed spines, of chronic arthritis, of severed hands. They bit their lips and put up with the pain. They had no option but to. In their minds they tried to switch off—to ignore the slights of co-workers, not to bridle against the glib cackling of foremen, and, in the case of Indian women, not to fret when they were slapped about by their husbands. Put up with the pain, they told themselves, deal with the pain—the shooting pains up the arms, the corroded hip joints, the back seizures from leaning over sewing machines for too many years, the callused knuckles from handwashing clothes, the rheumy knees from scrubbing the kitchen floor with their husbands' used underpants.
When my parents sat down to watch the wrestling on Saturday afternoons, milky cardamon tea in hand, they wanted to be entertained, they wanted a laugh. But they also wanted the good guy, just for once, to triumph over the bad guy. They wanted the swaggering, braying bully to get his come-uppance. They prayed for the nice guy, lying there on the canvas, trapped in a double-finger interlock or clutching his kidneys in agony, not to submit. If only he could hold out just a bit longer, bear the pain, last the course. If only he did these things, chances were, wrestling being what it was, that he would triumph. It was only a qualified victory, however. You'd see the winner, exhausted, barely able to wave to the crowd. The triumph was mainly one of survival.

Tubers and legumes are rich in dietary fiber and can help control diseases such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and clogged blood vessel. This was discovered during the recent research conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST), led by Dr. Trinidad P. Trinidad, Scientist II of FNRI-DOST.
The sources of dietary fiber are edible vegetables, fruits, grains of rice and corn, tubers and legumes. There are two types of dietary fiber; the soluble dietary fiber and the insoluble dietary fiber. The soluble dietary fiber attracts grease, fats, and water, making the excretion process smoother. On the other hand, insoluble dietary fiber can be compared to a sponge that circulates in our intestines. Its strands sweep the impurities away from the body.
In general, dietary fiber helps improve the digestive and excretion system, protects us from having TB, decreases the cholesterol and sugar level in our blood.
Six tubers were studied by Dr. Trinidad. These are yam, taro, tugi, potato, cassava, and sweet potato. Ten (10) legumes were also studied. These are mongo, soy beans, nuts, string beans, paayap, green peas, garbanzo peas, lima beans, kidney beans, and pigeon peas. The abovementioned tubers and legumes can usually be bought from the public markets.
Before the dietary fiber of each tuber was examined, it was boiled and dried under a low temperature. However, the legumes were soaked in water for overnight. The next day, they were boiled and dried under low temperature.
Based on the examination of Dr. Trinidad P. Trinidad, 40-73% of the total dietary fiber of the tubers are insoluble while 27-60% are soluble. As for the legumes, 83-99% of the total dietary fiber are insoluble and 1-17% are soluble.
According to the result of the studies, Dr. Trinidad ascertains that tubers and legumes are rich in dietary fiber and they are very beneficial to attain and maintain a healthy body.
