subcompact car

The term "carro popular" is typically used in Brazil to refer to cars that are classified as "subcompacts" in the United States. This implies small engines and no frills.

agree Kemper Combs : I like Donna's answer, too, but if we're going to use the term that is most commonly used in the States and everyone understands, I think this is it.

Thanks, Kemper.
disagree Cipriana (X) : Subcompact is smaller than a compact car. It´s a classification of size, not price.

basic models; "affordable" car

This is not ideal, but "popular" in Portuguese refers to "the people" - as in Volkswagen, a "people's car."

It does not refer to popularity, best-seller etc. That can easily be a fancy high-priced one. So someone else can perhaps select a better translaton.
Peer comment(s):

agree Anthony Baldwin : ¨popular¨ really means the same in English, of course, but I hadn´t thought of it that way. Good call.

economy car

That the way one will refer to a non-expensive, compact car in an informal way in the USA.
