deriva

Portuguese to English Other Linguistics
Mesmo conseguindo conter a dispersão, através dos “shifters”, o autor não consegue controlar o equívoco, e consequentemente, a deriva sempre se instala. Para o sujeito-enunciador a deriva é um processo inconsciente.

sidetracking/going off on a tangent

We must return to the conception of “drift” in language. If the historical changes that take place in a language, if the vast accumulation of minute modifications which in time results in the complete remodeling of the language, are not in essence identical with the individual variations
Example sentence:

The drift of speech changes dialects and in long terms

dispersion

In the original sentence, the shifters only contain dispersion, which therefore continues to exist, though in lesser degree (/dispersão/ and /deriva/ are synonyms).

... to formulate tables of differences, as is done in linguistics, Foucault explains that systems of dispersion are the underlying reality of all discursive statements.
