DE CRIAÇÃO

family relations
as in 'irmão de criação'.
I'm not talking about a legimately adopted child or step-child, but a child that was raised by another family and is today considered to be a member of the family that brought them up.
any idea will be appreciated!
thanks!

Portuguese term (edited):
filho de criação
Selected
raised as a son
1. "raised (by Beltrano's parents) as a son"
2. "raised as Beltrano's brother (by his parents)"

: note that in the UK, fostering is considered a temporaray arrangement, as opposed to adoption which is permanent

: In the US, foster parenting is a legal arrangement, whereas "craição" in Brazil is not.

Please don't trash me just because the word is technically for a "whole" brother, but we do use the term siblings in a much wider context such as chimpanzees are our siblings. Just my humble suggestion

: No trashing, it's just plain wrong. The word "sibling" covers both brother and sister. Applying it to outside that specific family relationship is as arbitrary and/or figurative as is to use either "brother" or "sister"
