As the number of players is usually finite, "loser", "winner", and "challenger" can be recycled. That is why two people can also 摆擂 -- 两个人这种摆擂. The winner and loser may swap places in the next game. But the essence of 摆擂 is that the winner stays for the next game, as compared with other games like a fresh new pair entering the game and both the current winner and loser out.

To simply: winner-challenger game. that wraps up the two-and-more player scenarios.
