For those of you who might not have seen the terribly sad news in the Italian forum or elsewhere, our esteemed, valued colleague Giles Watson has passed away, far far too soon.

One day, a cobbler pointed out to the great artist Apelles that the shoes in one of his paintings weren't accurate. Apelles duly took note. The cobbler went on to criticise the rest of the painting, causing Apelles to exclaim (in the Latin translation) "Sutor, ne ultra crepidam!" ("Cobbler, stick to footwear!").
I only mention this story because it has given English the glorious verb "ultracrepidate", something translators do if we take on work that falls outside our sphere of knowledge.
Wouldn't it be nice if artists and cobblers could work together, though?
I also had the pleasure of an email exchange with him not even a year ago; we talked about Italian wines and the region of Friuli, and Giles and his wife living relatively close to Austria, my country of birth. He had a chance to see Salzburg with his wife and thoroughly enjoyed it. Giles invited me to get in touch should I ever be in the area.
What a nice man! I am sad that I couldn't meet him in person.
But I am glad I got to know him a little bit through our email exchange.
Be in Peace, Giles!

What a terrible shame. I always enjoyed Giles' great knowledge and insight. Rest in peace.
