May 7, 2014

قررت عدم التقدم للاختبار لانه يجمع التخصص التقنية مع الطبي في باع واحد، يعني أنك قد تصادف قطعة ترجمة طبية في الامتحان، وهذا ما لا أستطيع القيام به.

You shouldn't let the scientific/technical passage scare you off of the exam. First, the passage will be something intended for broad consumption, but with that specialization. An article on cancer, smartphones, or a recent outbreak of mumps from المجلة or العربية, for example.

You shouldn't let the scientific/technical passage scare you off of the exam. First, the passage will be something intended for broad consumption, but with that specialization. An article on cancer, smartphones, or a recent outbreak of mumps from المجلة or العربية, for example.

Second, you must translate the general passage, but you may choose between the scientific/technical passage and the business/legal passage. So if there is a medical passage that is outside your comfort zone, simply translate the business/finance passage instead.

Here is the excerpt from the ATA website:
What does the certification examination consist of?

An ATA certification examination is a three-hour, open-book, proctored exam that offers the candidate three passages of about 225 to 275 words each (actual text for passages with English as a source language and the English equivalent for passages with English as a target language). Two of these passages must be translated. Passage A is required. Candidates must choose either Passage B or Passage C (but not both).

Passage A must be translated. It is a general text that expresses a view, sets forth an argument or presents a new idea. Examples: a newspaper editorial, an essay, a non-fiction book.

Passage B may be technical, scientific or medical in content. It may be written by an expert, but not for other experts in that field. Examples: a patient education brochure, operating or installation instructions, an encyclopedia article.

Passage C may be financial, business or legal in the broadest sense. It may be written by an expert, but not for other experts in that field. Examples: a contract or lease, a financial report, a government regulation.

Each type of examination passage is chosen in such a way as to avoid highly specialized terminology challenges requiring research. There are indeed terminology challenges, but they can be met with a good general dictionary and a general specialty dictionary (medical, technical, legal, financial).

In addition to the text to be translated, each examination passage includes Translation Instructions, specifying the context within which the translation is to be performed (text source and translation purpose, audience, and medium) and providing specific instructions such as “use U.S. English” or “translate xxx as XXX.” Translation Instructions can be thought of as reflecting the client's expectations, were the examination a real-life translation assignment.

I recommend reading both the B and C passages, and then select the one you feel the most comfortable with. More than once I have heard someone (from various languages, not just A>E) comment that they chose a passage they were not planning to because of how the source was written.

All the best,

Tim

Take the trial test May 7, 2014

This was my experience exactly. Since there were no IT or related technical fields, I had planned for legal, expecting that it would be easier for the non-specialist than medical. On the spot, however, I chose Medical instead. I felt that some of the expressions in the legal text left little room for error, while the medical text dealt with aspects into which I could bring things I had learnt from certain life experiences.

I also second the rest of Tim's advice.

In addition, I strongly suggest taking the trial exam at home. It is much less costly to decide whether the exam is for you based on the trial exam. This does not mean you have to pass the trial exam, but at least it will tell you whether you can deal with that level of difficulty. You may decide to go for it, work on some issues and try again in a couple of years or wait until an EN>AR exam is available.

All the best,

Alaa

Thanks, Alaa May 7, 2014

Thank you. I guess the medical does not look too bad for me now. And I will take your advice and will take the practice test, some time later.

How to use the practice test May 8, 2014

I am glad you decided to try and wish you success.

As I said, you don't have to pass the practice test to decide whether or not to take the certification test. Markers are usually much stricter on the practice than they are on the actual test. However, you will be able to judge whether this is for your or not. The practice test experience will also help you hone your skills for the actual test.
