I've read these posts and they summarize the problem I've had. I just spent the entire day trying to remedy tagging issues:
I first started by copying the source TM into the target TM so that I didn't disrupt any other the tags. That didn't work.
Then I did as Jean-Pierre suggested and marked all of the units containing tags as untranslated. That didn't work either.
Now I just opened a new project and will begin re-translating what I've already done. I don't kn... See more I've read these posts and they summarize the problem I've had. I just spent the entire day trying to remedy tagging issues:

Can anyone think of a way to either ensure that the tags are being transferred correctly or, if not, let me know if there's another error so that I don't put a lot of time in for nothing?
I'm in a bind here, so I would appreciate any help.
I'm translating a PDF, by the way. Trados Studio 2009.

Hi Oliver,
I recommend that you always have tag display ON. If they are hidden, this could lead to serious problems such as yours. This is especially the case of PDFs which are usually heavily tagged after their conversion.

Tools > Options will open the Options window. Expand the Files type (click on the triangle). Expand Microsoft Word 2007 (or whichever file type you want to change) by clicking the triangle. Click Tag Verification and you will be able to change the tag verification settings for this file type only.
I would not recommend changing the default settings. I find them to be perfect the way they are.
PS. Please let me know if you are able to follow those instructions. If not I will try to explain it more clearly.

I went through the steps of ensuring that I see all tags, hit F8 to see any error messages (received none), and I tried the other ideas of updating TMs before exporting (saving target as), and changing the status etc. Nothing works! I still get the same error message as posted above. I also get this message when I try to preview the text.

I've also tried first converting the Word 2007 docx file to 2003 doc, alas: no difference. If I convert the file to rtf, txt or xml, I can export those file types after having translated them in TS09, but the formating is then lost, and I can't deliver the file like that.
What could be the problem, considering the fact that all the tags, according to the tag verification, are correct? And how can I solve this problem?
Shouldn't this be considered a bug and therefore the responsibility of the folks at SDL Trados to fix it? ▲ Collapse

While I'm not at home now--so I can't test it--I believe I've discovered the solution to my own problem, or rather discovered why I encountered the problem in the first place.
How transit helped:

How transit helped:
Last night I exported the TM to a tmx file and sent it to my "other" work address (I work as an in-house translator by day and freelance at all other times). The company where I work (my day job) uses the older version of transit (XV). I imported the tmx file into transit and discovered that the file name of the word document including a date (15.01.10) was in the editor field (I'm sure I neglected to see the type of segment displayed on the right-hand side of the editor -- my mistake), and I translated it, including the date (15/01/10).
I'm quite certain that this is the cause of the headache.
Incidentally, is there a way to hide segments like that, which belong to the document file structure and which may not be touched?

Sorry, I haven't found a solution, either. A week or two ago it happened again - unable to save for whatever reason. Since it was a short document and I had a tight deadline, I ended up copying and pasting everything into Wordfast, and, voila, at least I had a translation.
Of course, I am running into other bugs and odd behaviors as I keep working with the program.

Only this time the error message is slightly different when I click on internal preview: (missing bookmark start tag with name). Then I tried the same process without translating any segments and clicked on preview and get the standard error message: "Error while converting to Word Document"
That leads me to believe that it doesn't have anything to do with the tags in the target file at all (unless of course the file is loaded incorrectly in the first place). So I really don't know what could be wrong. The files seem to be fine outside of SDL Trados 2009. I can open them and convert them to all kinds of different file types (e.g. .odt, rtf, doc, txt etc.) without any problems. What seems to be the trouble for TS09?
I hope somebody can solve this issue. I'd like to be able to use the software and be able to RELY on it. But when bugs of this nature arise, it doesn't exactly give me too much confidence in using it for further projects (which is a huge blow to me, since I just forked over some €800 for the thing, hoping to use it as my primary tool).
Is anyone from SDL Trados monitoring this thread? ▲ Collapse

I always copy source to target when I see tags and then translate round that. It seems to work most of the time. On this occasion I had deleted a space at the end of the sentence which had preceded the German verb I had removed. Not visible to the naked eye, and definitely not picked up by tag verification in the first version of the project, worryingly.
Since upgrading with SP1 everything has worked normally (also no more weird font changes). I'm holding my breath - but this may be a case of famous last words ...! ▲ Collapse

I'm not sure what you mean exactly. Maybe I just need to get some sleep :-/ Do you mean you created a new project with a different name i.e. re-imported the source file(s)?
I really don't know why that should work, but lucky for you it did In my case, I've already tried reimporting the file but that hasn't worked, I tried to "save as target" and "preview" the target text without even translating any segments, as stated above, and I still get the error message. I don't see how there could be a problem with the tags in the TT since I didn't touch anything. It seems to me the texts were just loaded improperly to begin with. But I have no way of knowing.
Sigh...

...but for me it doesn't appear to be a tag issue that I could easily remedy. Tag verificaton doesn't reveal any errors (as stated above -- even if I don't translate a single segment, or only translate a tagless segment and try to either prevew or "save target as", I get the same error).
Does anyone else have a solution?
I can export the texts easy enough usig Transit XV (no errors or problems at all)

In Word when opening the file chose "Repair" from the "Open" menu.
Then save the file.
You can also try to use the Compatibility pack from Microsoft to save as 2007 and then resave as 2003. You can also try to open in OpenOffice and save as Word.
If the file makes problems even without a single tagged segment translated, then most probably the file itself is already corrupt.

This might be the answer why.
But it really looks your file is corrupt - a text field for example on the first page or in the header/footer, inserted in unprofessional way or a field somwhere in the nirvana, not visible, but placed in a wrong way or so.
I would need to see the file to be able to say more, but most probably you will get it repaired.
