I am working on an ad to appear in the Hong Kong and Taiwan markets which will show the word "teacher" for a male -

what is the correct word for it for the Hong Kong and Taiwan markets

I have been given

老師 for Taiwan
and 教師 for Hong Kong

however another translator gave me 老師 for both Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Which is correct?

陳SIR是這樣說... Oct 29, 2006

香港人尊稱小學、幼稚園教師為﹕張先生、李先生-不論男的或女的都是一樣。中學﹕男的-陳Sir、黃Sir, 女的-Ms. Cheung(張),Ms. Lee(李)。
職業﹕中學教師,小學教師或小學教員。但是,稱『先生』為『老師』開始普遍,可能是受中國大陸影響。

both are the similar/same Oct 29, 2006

In Hong Kong, generally speaking, 老師 is a title of a professional.

We usually call 李老師 instead of 李教師; as a organisation, we call 教師團體 rather than 老師團體.

I think it is the same in Taiwan

It all depends on the context Oct 29, 2006

HI kernsanfran,

it is really hard to find the approrpiate term without looking at the context.

As the other colleagues have pointed out, there are many possibilities. An inappropriate choice would make the script sound weird.

Yes, it is the same in Taiwan. No difference at all. Using the term 老師 or 教師 depends on the context. Your examples are fully correct.
