Option None/Zero Missing Jul 21, 2012

What about None/Zero?

I have not travelled any place this year, nor do I expect to do so in the second half of 2012.

Should I feel guilty about it? Guess not.

And why this presumption that we have all travelled outside our respective countries of residence? Plenty to see and do where I am.

More importantly, without the "None" option, I'm sure that the majority of us are locked out of getting our daily Browniz fix. Gasp!

I'm just waiting for the show-offs to wake up.... Jul 21, 2012

..."Oh, I've been to 12 so far, Italy, Croatia, Australia....I'm oh so well-travelled and cosmopolitan blah blah".

I really disfavour polls that seem like an excuse to brag.

(Cue the lynching....)

Not all countries are equal... Jul 21, 2012

When you live in a "country" as small as mine, you're in another one as soon as you leave your back yard

It does make a difference if you consider the European Union as one "country", or at least the Schengen countries.

What is a "country"? A place you need a visa (or customs, or any kind of ID verification) to enter?

It is more difficult indeed to leave an island (or to get into some - Britain for instance) or a country as large as a continent (India, China or the US for instance).

Why do ProZians always complicate things? I'm not an English native speaker, but I think the question and the options given are worded in a way that allows anyone to participate, because - unless you live on an airport - pretty much everyone is located in a country at all times.

I don't think this poll is particularly relevant either, but anyway, I voted 2, since I've mostly stayed in my home country this year, except for a daytrip to my closest neighbouring country.

For family reasons, I travel to my home country almost every month, sometimes just for a long weekend, others for up to a week or so. Right now I'm in Portugal, where the weather is lovely, hot and sunny...

I agree with KKastenhuber: the question asks how many countries we've been in, not how many we've been to.

I've been in Greece all year. I spent a few days in Crete a couple of months ago and will probably visit another of the islands before the year is over, but I have no desire to leave the country.

Where have the people been who think the zero option is missing? Flying non-stop since January 1st I guess, or maybe on the space station.

That being said, there are some people here at ProZ who think the place I live is not a country, so maybe I need the zero option.

Hello samah A. fattah, good morning everyone!

I agree with Interlangue on this one: it really depends a bit on political geography.

This year I've been to two countries other than Uruguay, where I live, but I haven't used my passport.

Hello samah A. fattah, good morning everyone!

This year I've been to two countries other than Uruguay, where I live, but I haven't used my passport.

In the summer we took a week's holiday in the eastern province of Rocha. To get there, after following the coast for 300 km, we had to cross the town of Chuy (Uruguayan name) or Chuí (Brazilian name). We took the "International Avenue", of which two lanes are in Uruguay and two lanes are in Brazil. After leaving the town we headed north for 8 kilometers and reached our hotel. It sits on a hill overlooking a large wetland and, beyond the closest cement marker, most people can't tell where one country ends and the other one begins. The birds don't know either. Needless to say, we enjoyed the beaches in both countries.

Quite recently we spent a weekend in Buenos Aires, capital city of Argentina, which is around 200 km away from Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. In fact the two capitals are closer to each other than to many of the provinces in the respective countries. Weekends "on the other side of the pond" are very frequent: Uruguayans go for the theatre, the energy, the shops; I think Argentines come over for the opposite, the relaxed atmosphere, the beaches.

Have a great weekend.

Does Wales count? Jul 21, 2012

As a different country? I mean they have their own language, culture
I live right by the border and I'm sure I've actually crossed it this year sometime....

Hmmm

This kind of poll elicits discussions as relevant as "do you like reality TV shows?" Some people find them enthralling, even educational. Others find it disgusting and a complete waste of time.

That's why I didn't vote on this poll. Most of my colleagues here read my mind.

Five countries Jul 21, 2012

Five countries, but that is because I work as an interpreter for the local government and they are involved in various European projects: I did not travel for fun, I did it because I was on business.
