First thing Mar 24, 2012

Most days, as soon as I fall out of bed in the morning I start booting up the PC while squeezing my orange juice. I check my mail first and if I'm not in a hurry I usually log into proz next (like right now) to see if anything interesting is happening. Then I might look at the online newspaper for 5-10 mins before actually starting work...

As soon as you wake up? Mar 24, 2012

I am amazed that so many people start work "as soon as they wake up" - still in pyjamas, not washed or shaved, teeth not cleaned, no breakfast, just roll out of bed and straight to the computer. Or do they take laptops to bed with them?

Early, but not the moment I get up! Mar 24, 2012

I always start working at 08:00 in the morning. Chores and breakfast precede official hours. Also, even though my best time is in the morning, I still need to wake up first, and so does my brain!

Well, I guess most people (like me) found that this option was the closest to what they really do.

Of course most people do a few things before they actually start translating, like taking care of their body (food, wash, get dressed, whatever) or even getting the latest Proz and/or world news, like neilmac.

Moreover, the brain needs warming up before working, just like muscles, so doing a Kudoz or two is a good warming up exercise for the brain muscle (I find), on top of "re-socializing" after a long night of sleep...

Reading the news is another way of warming up too.

It is a well-kown fact that everybody's energy level is highest from about 6am till they have lunch, with a decrease after lunch (according to how heavy that lunch was - without mentioning alcoholic drinks, which might put you to sleep), an increase in energy after digestion/siesta time until dinner (meat takes 4-5 hours to digest, this means your energy level might be like it was in the morning around 5pm only...), and another decrease after that... Everybody goes through the same cycle, with different levels of intensity. That's what I learned in one of my HRM-related classes. So performance increases with light meals. I.e. it's probably better to have a light lunch, a 4pm snack and a light dinner if you want to work late...

But so it does not really make sense to start any later than "as soon as you wake up" or the closest to that.

Late in the morning Mar 24, 2012

Which for me means anywhere between 8.30 and 10.00 am. The first thing I do when I wake up is going out for a walk with my dog (dogs, as from Monday! yaay!!! ). I actually "wake up" outside, as most of the times I am sleepy while walking. Sometimes I run with my dog for a half hour or more. This gives me a plus of energy for the next few hours. I like my work, but working immediately after waking up? This sounds so sad.

I chose late in the morning too Mar 24, 2012

Like Veronica, this would typically be between 8.30 and 10ish. I don’t even consider working before I’ve had my fresh orange and carrot juice, followed by garlic toast with tomatoes usually and tea. Then I read the news, usually do this daily poll, go out to do anything I might need to do, and then (and only then) I open my email and start work.

If I have no work on, I often go out for a similar sort of breakfast (with coffee instead of tea in that scenario), and check my emails

Oh, and like Kate Moss, I don’t even consider getting out of bed for less than €10k a day, lol

I wake up around 8 a.m. and still in my pyjamas (sorry, Jack!) I read my e-mails, I take a shower and brush my teeth, I cook and eat my breakfast, I watch the news, I do a few chores, like emptying the dishwasher, I think about what I am doing for my lunch and then… I am ready for work!

As soon as I fall out of bed :) Mar 24, 2012

First thing I do when I get up is come up to the office, connect, read mail, check comments on the quick poll, read the headlines, possibly play a game of Mahjong, go downstairs, prepare tea, enjoy a cup or 2 on the terrace/patio/deck/porch (whatever you want to call it) in the company of birds, plan dinner, go back upstairs, stop by at the bathroom if I have nothing to hand in first thing in the morning, then go up and start working (between 7 and 8 am).
If I have a job to hand in early,

I personally tend to be more energetic in the afternoon!

Since there is almost always something which needs my immediate attention, there's no "usual" work start for me. I normally start to work the first chance I get which can be at any time of the day or, sometimes, of the night.

late morning Mar 24, 2012

as soon as I have my coffee. However, i often get up early and boot up my computer while sitting in bed, check to see if i got any emails from European clients. Then i turn off and go back to bed. I really start working as soon as I have my coffee.

I'm amazed at how many of you say "late" meaning between 8 and 10. For me anything before 9 is early, and late morning means just before lunch.

I am a zombie until lunchtime, and only really get going at about 4pm. Using my brain is painful in the morning so I usually just do housework and boring little bits and pieces, getting things out of the way so I can tick plenty of stuff on my list and lull myself into a false sense of achievement. Then I have to get past the urge to nap after lunch (which would simply re-befuddle my brain), then by 4 I'm right in the swing of it and can romp through what was leaving me totally perplexed earlier on. This is when I realise exactly what the author is trying to say, when I find the best way to phrase tricky concepts, when suddenly everything I write sounds like bona fide English without me having to rack my brain, it simply flows. And I have no desire to stop either, I don't even see time passing!

I don't eat meat, so perhaps that helps

If I'm here right now, it's because my after-lunch coffee has not yet kicked in and I'm seriously thinking of going shopping while the sun is shining, the boring translation I wish I hadn't agreed to do can wait till that precious moment before we go out for pre-dinner drinks. Although just writing what I have just written makes me think maybe I can make serious inroads into that translation after all
