Sadly, though, the calls are rarely for me. But as my husband works on the same premises, I have to answer his calls too! | | | David Wright Austria Local time: 03:45 German to English + ...
Sometimes! It really depends on whether it is a quick call to inquire about availability or a detailed discussion of a word in a translation I did not do (which does interrupt, but doesn't happen too often) or a client getting back to discuss aspects of a translation that I have done (doesn't really interrupt, since it is part of the job). I wouldn't dream of using an answering machine during working hours. | | | Interlangue (X) Angola Local time: 03:45 English to French + ...
I trained customers, family and friends a long time ago and all use email most of the time, sometimes Skype chat windows. However few and far between, the phone calls I get are mostly "spam" asking to "speak to the boss" and trying to sell something.

my answering machine screens them - the vast majority are marketing companies 99% and waste my time if I answer them but with call ID I screen them and the answering machine does that too - the vast majority of my clients send me an email - if I see it's a "normal" call with an ID i.e. normal number and not a freephone number or withheld number I answer it as it's business - very few customers have withheld numbers but they always leave a message or send an email... On the contrary, it's extremely useful for work and staying in touch with the world outside my little transtabubble. When I don't want to be disturbed, I switch it off. There now, that didn't hurt, did it? | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 03:45 Spanish to English + ...

Not if you change your status to "do not disturb" - "busy" - "away" or "invisible" And with the chat function, I do not have to reply immediately if it is not important and I am too busy. Also, I use several accounts: customers don't need to know I work over the weekend or in the evening.

I answered with "Other" because hardly any of my repeat clients would ever think of calling me instead of sending an e-mail. From potential clients, I might get one call every six months or so. Daniel

Also, I use several accounts: customers don't need to know I work over the weekend or in the evening. Turning the status to "do not disturb" does keep people from contacting me. In regard to its chat function, if the IM is urgent, I reply right away, if not then I just continue to work and reply when I need a break, get a little stuck or just close office for the day. That is, of course, only if the IM comes from a private contact. The regular phone has its answering machine to take care of calls for me.
I don't give my telephone number to the clients, if they need me they can email me, that's good enough. I would refuse to accept anything that has a deadline within the next hour or two anyway

... but just occasionally, if I go for a quick breath of fresh air in daylight hours, which can be very short in the murky grey winters here, I find three clients have all been ringing desperately while I was out. I don't know how they do it. I can go for a whole fortnight without any clients calling at all. Their other favourite moment to ring is when I am really struggling with a tight deadline. It is like those spam callers who can time the call to coincide exactly ... See more | | | Not at all when working at home, | Oct 14, 2011 |
but hard time when in the office, with people endlessly chattering by phone. Using earplugs is unpractical, because sometimes I need the ears to communicate.
