Source text - English Why is the mastery of risk such a uniquely modern concept? Why did humanity wait the many thousands of years leading up to the Renaissance before breaking down the barriers that stood in the way of measuring and controlling risk?
These questions defy easy answers. But we begin with a clue. Since the beginning of recorded history, gambling―the very essence of risk-taking―has been a popular pastime and often an addiction. It was a game of chance that inspired Pascal and Fermat's breakthrough into the laws of probability, not some profound question about the nature of capitalism or visions of the future. Yet until that moment, throughout history, people had wagered and played games without using any system of odds that determines winnings and losings today. The act of risk-taking floated free, untrammeled by the theory of risk management.
Human beings have always been infatuated with gambling, because it puts us head-to-head against the fates, with no holds barred. We enter this daunting battle because we are convinced that we have a powerful ally: Lady Luck will interpose herself between us and the fates(or the odds) to bring victory to our side. Adam Smith, a masterful student of human nature, defined the motivation: "The overweening conceit which the greater part of men have of their own abilities and their absurd presumption in their own good fortune."
Although Smith realized that the human propensity to take risk propelled economic progress, he feared that society would suffer when that propensity ran amuck. So he was careful to balance moral sentiments against the benefits of a free market. A hundred and sixty years later, another great English economist, John Maynard Keynes, agreed: "When the capital development of a country becomes the by-product of the activities of a casino, the job is likely to be ill-done"

Source text - English On Thanksgiving Day in 1992, a lame-duck American president ordered 28,000 troops into a war-crushed basket-case country in East Africa—and set his nation upon a new azimuth of foreign policy. When George H. W. Bush closed out his four-year presidency by sending his military into Somalia to aid two million starving inhabitants, he set in place a foreign policy doctrine that had been largely eclipsed for sixty years: liberal interventionism. Wilsonism was back.
It wasn't that Wilsonism had played no part in American policy making in those intervening decades. Expressions of the humanitarian impulse had emerged at various times in support of numerous foreign policy actions. Both Franklin Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan were masters at infusing their rhetoric with such expressions to bolster their intentions in the realm of realpolitik. And throughout the Cold War, foreign policy debates often focused on the extent to which global actions should be guided by considerations of morality. But without exception American presidents felt constrained to justify their interventionist actions ultimately on the basis of vital national interests. There could be debates, and often were, about whether particular initiatives did in fact conform to American interests, but the very fact of the debates reflected the political reality that humanitarian arguments alone could not justify sending American troops into harm's path.

지난 5월 수입차 업계는 '4월 판매실적'을 두고 한동안 들썩였다. BMW의 인기모델 520d가 베스트셀링카 1위 자리를 메르세데스 벤츠 E220 CDI에 넘겨줬기 때문이다. E220 CDI가 월간 판매 1위에 오른 것은 지난해 9월 이후 7개월 만이었다. 이와 함께 벤츠코리아는 4월 한 달간 3310대를 판매하며 한국 진출 이후 첫 월간 판매 3000대도 돌파했다.
당시 업계는 벤츠코리아 성장의 일등공신으로 할부금융 등 파격 프로모션을 지목했다. 그리고 그 뒤에는 메르세데스 벤츠 파이낸셜 서비스 코리아(MBFSK)의 아디오펙 대표(사진)가 있었다.

Britta Seeger, president of Mercedes-Benz Korea is a female head, which is rarely seen in Korea’s top ten imported car businesses. Daimler-Benz AG went on to sent Adi Ofek to MBFSK in January, which heralded female dominance. Benz Korea is the only company, sales and financing of which are all headed by female chiefs. “Seven years in Korea is something like a gift for me,” Adi Ofek said on the thirteenth in her MBFSK office on Namdaemun-ro Street, “and I hope this luck will continue from now on.”
Adi Ofek graduated from the prestigious Tel Aviv University and its graduate school with the business administration major, and started her career by entering Daimler Financial Service Israel in 2000. In 2007 she was chosen as the first female director of Asia-Africa region and spent five years in DFS AAP region of Singapore as CRO. As an Israeli, she has an experience of military service.

Source text - Korean 연못 위에 떠있는 연잎을 보면 마음이 청아해진다. 연잎 위에 작은 물방울들이 투명하게 빛나며 동글동글 맺혀 있다. 실바람이라도 불면 이들이 조금씩 굴러다니며 이내 큰 물방울을 만든다. 연잎 위에 묻어있는 미세한 먼지를 닦아내며 물방울이 연못으로 떨어진다.
과학자들은 연잎 표면에 어떤 비밀이 숨어있는지 알아내고, 그 결과를 실생활에 응용하기 시작했다. 흔히 물과 친하게 잘 섞이는 성질을 친수성, 반대로 물과 친하지 않은 성질을 소수성이라고 부른다. 연잎 표면은 자연계 어떤 물질보다 소수성이 강하기 때문에 ‘초소수성’을 지닌다. 전자현미경을 이용해 표면을 나노미터(nm, 1nm=10억분의 1m) 수준으로 관찰한 결과 그 초소수성의 비밀이 드러났다.
보통 바닥면 위에 물방울이 놓여 있을 때 물방울의 측면과 바닥면이 접촉하는 각도가 60도보다 크면 소수성, 30도 이하이면 친수성을 띤다고 말한다. 그런데 연잎 바닥면이 물방울과 접촉하는 각도는 150도 이상이다. 그냥 소수성이 아닌 ‘초소수성’을 갖는다는 뜻이다.
그 이유는 무엇일까. 연잎 표면에 있는 무수한 미세 돌기 덕분이다. 먼저 바닥면의 미세 돌기는 물방울이 연잎 표면과 접촉하는 각도를 커지게 만든다. 또한 바닥면 위에 형성돼 있는 봉오리들에도 무수한 돌기가 있어 비슷한 효과를 일으킨다. 연잎 표면은 이와 같은 이중적인 소수성 덕분에 ‘초소수성’을 띠는 것이다.
나노 세계에서는 이처럼 표면이 거칠수록 소수성이 강해지는 특이한 현상이 벌어진다. 이른바 ‘연잎 효과’라고 부르는 특성이다. 우리가 접하는 일상에서 표면이 아무리 거칠어도 물에 잘 젖지 않는 대상을 찾기는 쉽지 않다. 그러나 실험실에서는 실리콘 같은 고체의 표면을 미세 가공하여 이중 돌기를 갖는 나노구조 표면을 만들 수 있다. 각 돌기의 길이와 폭은 대략 50nm 내외이다. 옆이나 위에서 보면 마치 꽃이 피어나는 모습 같다.

Scientists found out what secret is on the surface of lotus leaves, and started to apply the results to daily lives. Commonly, a physical property of being easily mixed with water is called hydrophilicity, and that of being unfriendly to water is called hydrophobicity. The surfaces of lotus leaves are superhydrophobic because their hydrophobicity is much stronger than any other materials. Nano-meter level research using electron microscopes has revealed the secret of the superhydrophobicity.
Generally, surfaces with a contact angle > 60º of a water droplet resting on them are referred to as “hydrophobic,” and those with an angle < 30º as “hydrophilic.” And the surface of a lotus leaf has a contact angle >150º, which means they are not just hydrophobic but “superhydrophobic.”
What is the cause? That’s thanks to numerous microscopic papillae on the surface of a lotus leaf. First, the micro papillae on the surface of a lotus leaf make the contact angle of a droplet bigger. And then even smaller ones on the micro papillae make the similar effect. This double structured-hydrophobicity of a lotus leaf leads to “superhydrophobicity.”
In the nano-world, the rougher the surface is, the stronger the hydrophobicity, which is a peculiar phenomenon. This is so called “the lotus effect.” In our daily lives, it is not easy to find a material which hardly get wet even when the surface is more or less rough. But in laboratories nano-structure surfaces with double papillae can be created through surface micromachining of the solids like silicon. The length and width of each papilla are about 50nm. It looks like a flower if viewed from a side or the top.

I am an English instructor and translator(English to Korean and vice versa) living and working in South Korea. I would like to get a position for a translator or for general office work including reporting, marketing, and public relations. I can take, edit, and upload on the Internet still or motion pictures using professional tools.
Learning and Sharing. These two words explain exactly who I truly am. In my early twenties I had been absorbed by reading books, watching movies, and meeting new people. These were not my hobbies but actual jobs at that time. I was much more interested in doing meaningful activities, maintaining intimate relationships than making money. And then I started to teach English, which may be quite a logical consequence.
I am a born linguist, I believe. My first English teacher was a little bit shocked by my “born” British accent. Even though I didn’t major in English or other languages, and I have never been in English speaking countries, I was able to reach a high level of English proficiency in a short time. Once I got an almost full score of TOEIC, I thought I could teach TOEIC.
Actually I don’t like “teaching” something to somebody, or rather just the word. I think the word “teaching” often gives an impression of being one-sided or intimidating. I prefer to use “sharing.” Teaching is, or at least to me, should be sharing something. The more of bread I share, the less portion I get. But the more of knowledge I share, the bigger meaning I get. Over the past four years, I have been sharing my knowledge, my feelings, and my experiences with many people, which in itself is a priceless reward.
Another word I love is “change.” In a linguistic point of view, change is translation. Learning a new language is getting a new translation of the mother-tongue. So translation is a way of recognizing and truly understanding what you already know, or you think you already know but often don’t. For the past three years I translated English into Korean and vice versa. Although my major is history, I didn’t confine myself to that category. I have translated really all kinds of documents : contracts, proposals, certificates, manuals, instructions, emails, pamphlets, advertisements, websites, games, reports, newspaper articles, essays, treatises, etc.
The biggest advantage of translation may be the fact that those who try to change a word in one language to a word in another always get paid more than they actually have done. That’s because, as I said, translation is also a way of sharing.
Besides languages, I have a great interest in multi-media. I can take, edit, and improve still and motion pictures professionally. During my twenties, I took a 6 month course for commercial photography and completed another 6 month course for broadcast and film production. I can use Adobe Photoshop, Apple Final Cut Pro X, as well as MS office. I have an experience of producing a full-length documentary. And I got awarded two times for my writings about movies and TV dramas in national level competitions. Although I haven’t intensively focused on them, I have always paid a considerable attention to such media as photography, movies, broadcast, and the Internet.
