It’s not easy being an F1 rookie. We talk to Lucas di Grassi, Bruno Senna, Vitaly Petrov and Nico Hülkenberg, four debutants in one seriously cut-throat job
As Vitaly Petrov climbed from the wreckage of his Renault at the Korean Grand Prix, his second big smash in as many races, some concluded that it was another example of the Russian being out of his depth in F1. But if you consider the facts, you can’t help feeling a little sorry for Petrov. With the strength in depth of the F1 grid at an all-time high and testing restrictions tighter than ever, Petrov and fellow debutants Bruno Senna, Lucas di Grassi and Nico Hülkenberg, have faced the most challenging debut season in the history of F1. To put it into perspective, Lewis Hamilton had covered some 7,027 testing miles prior to his GP debut in 2007. By contrast Petrov, di Grassi, Senna, and Hülkenberg arrived in Bahrain this year with a little over 10,500 miles between them and, unlike Lewis, were unable to add to that mileage during the season. We sat down with the four rookies who completed the whole 2010 season to discuss the ups and downs of their first terms in the sport…
Lucas di Grassi: I’m not sure about you guys, but 2010 was the hardest year of my career by a long way. We [Virgin] didn’t even race for the first few GPs because we didn’t have reliability and I had to fuel save because our fuel tank was too small.
Bruno Senna: Yeah, it’s been a challenging year for me too. Starting the year with no testing as we did is almost unheard of for a team – not to mention for the drivers.
Vitaly Petrov: It’s probably the hardest time ever for rookie drivers – I did just two days testing in the dry and then went to a grand prix weekend. The simulator helps you to learn the tracks, but it’s not the same. Track time is the most important thing in Formula 1.
Nico Hülkenberg: I was excited when I got to Bahrain but I was nervous before the race.
LdG: I had a mixture of feelings, including enthusiasm, excitement and pressure to perform.
VP: For me, I think the pressure at the end of the season has been greater because at the beginning everything was new for me. It was difficult to expect anything from my performances.
BS: I was quite calm. At the first few races the objective was just to get to the finish because we had no idea what the car was capable of or how reliable it would be. After a few races, when we knew what was possible, the pressure started
to build a little bit.
NH: When I think back to the first qualifying sessions of 2010 in Bahrain, Melbourne, Malaysia and China and compare it with how I feel now, I’m much more confident and comfortable, so much more capable of choosing my setup and knowing what changes to make to the car.
I’ve made big progress as a driver.
LdG: Me too, not only technically but in all areas.
VP: Yes, I understand a lot of things better now, like the car and the setup. Now I can feel the improvement straight away when I get a new part on the car, like a new front wing for example. I think they’re the biggest improvements.
BS: For me, there are areas where I could have improved more if there had been more of a chance to mess around with the car and develop it. But I’ve come out of this season a stronger driver, especially in the head, which is where you have to stay motivated whatever the conditions.
LdG: Yeah, you have to be prepared mentally to arrive in F1. If you have a problem and your head is not able to cope with it, the problem can snowball and get worse race by race. So you need to be completely focused.
BS: It wasn’t the easiest thing for me to get used to seeing blue flags when I was used to fighting for wins and podiums in junior categories. The hardest thing was to stay motivated when I knew that if I did the best qualifying session of my life I’d still only be 20th or 21st. But in the end you become stronger and that’s the most important thing, really.
NH: Yeah, it’s difficult dealing with situations like not being at the front and not leading or winning races. You need to learn how to deal with it.
LdG: I came from GP2 expecting everything to be much more difficult, but you have to take it to another level in F1. Whether you’re in a top or a bottom team the level is very, very high. You have to be at 100 per cent all the time otherwise you’ll fall behind. It’s tougher than I imagined.
BS: I think that looking from the outside it’s hard to measure just how competitive the drivers are in F1. I mean, everybody is on it from the first moment and doing the maximum all the time. In GP2 you tend to get five or six drivers who are on a similar level but in F1 it’s everybody.
NH: But the thing is, if the Red Bull, Ferrari or McLaren guys make a mistake in qualifying and lose a few tenths they’re still in the top five. Where we are, it’s so much tighter and more competitive in that there’s no margin for error – if I made a mistake I’d be three places down. It’s very difficult for a rookie to always get that qualifying lap right, always get that race performance right.
LdG: In terms of driving the car, learning the circuits, talking with my engineers and dealing with the press, you’re just so much busier on a race weekend in F1 than GP2.
VP: I agree. I prefer to sleep before a race but now I don’t have time.
NH: I got a good look at F1 last year when I was reserve driver. Because of the testing ban I didn’t drive much but I got an idea of how F1 weekends worked and what to expect. I’ve also been very lucky to have a guy like Rubens Barrichello next to me this year. He’s never been like, “You should try this with your brake warm-up,” or “Try this line through this corner,” and I wouldn’t want that. The way I learnt is that we sat together in debriefs and I heard the way he talked about setup and the way we should approach the development of the car.
BS: Yes, I think the best idea is to have one experienced driver on the team because you’re going to learn a lot from that guy. When you’re on your own and you have to learn everything on the go and still develop the car and improve your performance it’s quite difficult.
VP: I agree it’s always better to have a strong team-mate. Then if you catch him it’s good. But for me, it was double the work to try to keep the car quick and be as close as possible to my team-mate. If you put Kubica in the car he would always get the best out of the setup. I had to learn the track, then improve the setup and then improve performance, so every time I had three or four times more work to do than him. He’d just get in the car and understand what to do.
LdG: I think there are two sides to having a fast, experienced team-mate. The good side is that you have to push all the time to be at the same level so it motivates you to go beyond your limits. The bad side is that if the team has to choose one driver over the other they will always side with the more experienced one. With the team being new and parts coming every day, Timo Glock and I had different cars a lot of the time. I know if the team had the opportunity to have the same parts on both cars they would have done. It’s not an ideal situation and I had it quite a lot this season.
NH: When I compare myself with Rubens I’m not happy with how the first third of the season went, but from then on I think I did a good job. Budapest was a good race for me and I was strong in Monza to keep Webber behind me for so long. I think of all the guys in the paddock, my expectations are the highest. So I’m not massively proud but I’m happy with the job I did in the second half of the season.
BS: I think I did a decent job. I’ve made a few mistakes that I regret, but you always make mistakes and no one does a perfect season. The important thing is that I learn from my mistakes. I hope to have a more solid season next year and then I think I’d be happier and more proud of myself. But there are a lot of positives; I’ve learned a lot and become more mature. Realistically there was no way I could score a result that would make my career because of the situation at the start of the season.
VP: My season was positive but I know I could do much better. Even when I got fifth place in Budapest I knew I could still do a better job. My target was to make fewer mistakes and try to finish every time, because you can learn a lot in an hour-and-a-half race. But I’ve enjoyed myself – F1 was my target and it’s where I want to be.
LdG: In terms of understanding F1, I’ve had a positive year. With the equipment I had I think there were very few times I could have pushed more. The race in Valencia where I outqualified and outraced Timo was probably my highlight.
NH: If I was to grade myself on my first season I’d maybe give myself a C. Perhaps I’m a bit hard on myself but ultimately I’ve got a competitive nature – I’m here to win one day and I think that you need to be hard on yourself to
be able to achieve something like that in a sport that’s as difficult as Formula 1.
BS: I think I deserve a B – I can be hard on myself but not too hard!
LdG: I’d give myself a B, too. But if I was to score based on how I think I could deliver as a driver in the future I’d say higher. I think that with the right equipment in the correct environment, I could fight with anyone here – just as I proved I could in other formulae. Don’t forget that at the Macau Formula 3 race in 2005 I came first, Robert Kubica was second and Sebastian Vettel was third…
VP: Personally, I’m looking forward to a break this winter. I think you need it to refresh your body and mind. You need a break from the pressure of motorsport.
LdG: I’m not actually looking forward to the winter break. I would be happy to carry on the season and keep racing!
BS: Me too. The last thing I want is a break – I’m in the rhythm right now and what I’d like to do is just to keep driving. It’s going to be a long, long break this year and the most important thing will be to focus on pre-season training. But for sure I will enjoy a week off sunbathing, just looking at the sky and thinking about next year.

그라시: 나도 그렇다. 기술적인 측면뿐만이 아니라 모든 측면에서 한 단계 발전할 수 있었다.
페트로프: 그렇다. 경주차와 셋업 등의 측면에 대해 훨씬 더 잘 이해하게 되었다. 이제는 프론트 윙과 같은 부품들이 새로 장착된 경우, 단번에 개선된 점을 찾아낼 수 있다. 이러한 부분이 가장 큰 발전이 아니었나 생각한다.
세나: 만약에 내게 경주차와 좀 더 많은 시간을 보내고 개발할 수 있는 기회가 주어졌다면, 지금보다 더 발전할 수 있는 부분들이 분명 있었을 것이라고 생각한다. 하지만 이번 시즌을 보내면서 더 강인한 드라이버로 거듭날 수 있었다. 특히 어떠한 상황에서도 흔들림 없이 목표에 집중해야 했기 때문에 강한 정신력을 얻게 되었다.
그라시: 그렇다. F1에 입성하려면 정신적으로 준비가 되어 있어야 한다. 문제가 발생했을 때 제대로 대처할 정신력을 갖추고 있지 않으면, 그 문제점은 시즌이 진행됨에 따라 눈덩이처럼 불어난다. 그렇기 때문에 고도의 집중력이 요구된다.
세나: 주니어 경기에서는 항상 우승이나 포디엄을 목표로 달리던 내가, F1에서는 블루 플래그를 받는 상황 자체가 적응하기 힘들었다. 가장 힘들었던 점은, 퀄러파잉 세션에서 생애 최고의 기록을 세워도 20위나 21위밖에 할 수 없다는 사실을 알면서도 자신감을 잃지 않는 것이었다. 하지만 그 모든 것을 지나왔기 때문에 더 강해질 수 있었고, 그것이 가장 중요한 점이라고 생각한다.
휠켄베르크: 그렇다. 상위 그룹에 속하지 못하고, 선두로 나서지 못하고, 레이스에서 우승을 차지할 수 없는 상황에 적응하는 것은 힘든 일이었다. 이러한 상황에 대처하는 방법 또한 스스로 터득해야 한다.
그라시: GP2에서 F1으로 오면서, 모든 것이 훨씬 더 어려워지겠다고 예상은 했지만, 실제로 겪어보니 F1은 아예 다른 차원의 경기였다. 최상위 팀이든, 최하위 팀이든, 모두 수준이 굉장히 높았다. F1에서는 항상 자신의 능력을 100퍼센트 발휘해야 하고, 그렇지 못하면 뒤쳐진다. 예상보다 훨씬 어렵고 힘든 세계였다.
세나: 외부에서 보면 F1 드라이버들간의 경쟁이 얼마나 치열한지 가늠하기 힘들 것이다. 드라이버들 모두가 시즌이 시작됨과 동시에 매 시간 최선을 다한다. GP2에서는 대여섯 명 정도의 드라이버들이 그렇지만, F1에서는 모든 드라이버들이 서로 치열하게 경쟁하고 있다.
휠켄베르크: 하지만 문제는, 레드 불이나 페라리, 맥라렌 팀의 드라이버들이 예선에서 실수를 저질러서 기록이 조금 뒤쳐졌다 하더라도, 어쨌든 그들은 상위 5위권 안에 든다는 점이다. 하지만 하위권 선수들은 기록의 격차가 훨씬 더 협소하기 때문에 단 한번의 실수도 용납되지 않는다. 만약 실수를 저지른다면 순위가 3위 정도 떨어질 것이다. 신인이면서도 항상 예선과 본 경기에서 최선의 결과만을 나타내야 했기 때문에 굉장히 힘들었다.

페트로프: 동의한다. 강한 선수와 팀메이트가 되는 것이 좋은 이유는, 그를 따라잡으면 좋은 결과를 얻을 수 있기 때문이다. 하지만 내 경우에는, 경주차의 스피드를 관리하는 동시에 팀메이트와의 간격을 최대한 줄이기 위해 노력하는 것이 쉽지만은 않았다. 쿠비짜는 어떠한 셋업에서든 최상의 결과를 이끌어내는 선수이다. 나는 트랙을 익히면서, 셋업을 개선하고, 주행도 향상시켜야 했기 때문에 항상 그보다 3~4배 정도의 노력을 기울여야 했다. 그는 경주차에 타자마자 무엇을 어떻게 해야 하는 지 바로 알아차렸다.
그라시: 빠르고 노련한 선수와 팀메이트가 되면, 좋은 점도 있지만, 나쁜 점도 있다. 우선 좋은 점은, 그와 같은 수준의 주행을 선보이기 위해 매 순간 엄청난 노력을 기울여야 하고, 그로 인해 자신의 한계를 뛰어 넘는 좋은 결과를 얻을 수 있다는 점이다. 그리고 나쁜 점은, 노련한 드라이버 위주로 팀 내 분위기가 형성된다는 점이다. 특히 내 경우에는, 팀이 신생팀인데다 새로운 부품들이 매일 쏟아져 나왔기 때문에, 티모 글록과 내가 아예 다른 경주차를 타야 하는 경우도 많았다. 만약에 팀이 두 대의 경주차에 같은 부품을 장착할 수 있는 상황이었다면, 당연히 그렇게 했을 것이라 생각하지만, 이번 시즌에는 그렇지 못했다. 상황이 좋지 않았고, 꽤 여러 번 다른 부품으로 출전해야 했다.
휠켄베르크: 시즌의 1/3 정도 시점까지 내가 선보였던 주행을 루벤스와 비교해보면 절대 만족스럽다고 할 수 없는 수준이었지만, 그래도 그 이후부터는 잘해냈다고 생각한다. 개인적으로는 부타페스트 경기가 좋았고, 몬자에서도 꽤 오랜 시간 동안 웨버보다 앞서서 달리면서 강한 면모를 보였다고 생각한다. 패독의 팀원 전체 중에서 가장 높은 목표를 가지고 있는 사람은 바로 나 자신이다. 그래서 이번 시즌이 엄청나게 만족스럽지는 않았지만, 시즌 후반에는 그런대로 잘 해냈던 것 같다.
세나: 나도 이번 시즌 결과에 만족하는 편이다. 후회스러운 실수가 몇 번 있었지만, 실수는 누구나 저지를 수 있고, 시즌 내내 완벽한 주행만을 선보이는 드라이버는 없다. 중요한 것은, 실수를 통해 내가 많은 것을 배워나간다는 점이다. 내년 시즌에는 좀 더 발전된 모습을 보일 수 있기를 바라고, 그렇게 된다면, 스스로 만족할 수 있고 자랑스럽게 생각할 수 있을 것 같다. 하지만 이번 시즌을 통해 많은 것을 배웠고, 한층 더 성숙해졌기 때문에 이번 시즌도 긍정적으로 생각하고 있다. 현실적으로 시즌 초반의 상황 때문에 내가 포인트를 획득하는 것은 불가능했다.
페트로프: 나 또한 이번 시즌을 긍정적으로 생각하지만, 훨씬 더 잘할 수 있었다는 아쉬움이 남는다. 부다페스트에서 5위를 기록했을 때도, 내가 그보다 더 좋은 성적을 낼 수 있다는 것을 알고 있었다. 1시간 반 동안 진행되는 레이스에서 많은 것을 배울 수 있기 때문에, 이번 시즌에서 나의 목표는 되도록 실수를 줄이고 레이스를 완주하는 것이었다. 어쨌든 F1에 출전할 수 있다는 것 자체가 큰 기쁨이었다.
그라시: 나는 이번 시즌을 통해 F1에 대해 많은 것을 알게 되었다. 지금 생각해봐도 내 경주차의 셋업으로는 더 좋은 결과를 얻기 힘들었다. 개인적으로는 예선과 본선에서 티모 글록을 제쳤던 발렌시아 경기가 가장 기억에 남는다.
휠켄베르크: 내 첫 시즌에 대해 스스로 점수를 메겨야 한다면, 나는 C를 주고 싶다. 내 자신에게 너무 관대하지 못한 평가라고 할 수도 있지만, 나는 천성적으로 경쟁심이 강하고, 경기에서 꼭 우승하고 싶기 때문에, 포뮬러원처럼 힘든 스포츠에서 그러한 목표를 달성하기 위해선 스스로를 냉철하게 채찍질해야 한다고 생각한다.
세나: 나는 B를 주겠다. 나도 스스로에게 냉정하고 싶지만, 너무 가혹한 점수를 줄 수는 없다!

페트로프: 개인적으로 나는 이번 윈터 브레이크를 간절히 기다리고 있다. 몸과 마음을 재정비하고, 모터스포츠에서 쌓인 중압감을 떨쳐 버릴 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것이기 때문이다.
그라시: 나는 윈터 브레이크가 기다려지지 않는다. 나는 시즌이 끝나지 않고 계속 레이스에 출전할 수 있었으면 좋겠다!
