HTM or HTML Extension?
When you save an HTML file, you can use either the .htm or the .html extension. We have used .htm in our examples. It might be a bad habit inherited from the past when some of the commonly used software only allowed three letter extensions.
With newer software we think it will be perfectly safe to use .html.

You can easily edit HTML files using a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor like FrontPage or Dreamweaver, instead of writing your markup tags in a plain text file.
However, if you want to be a skillful Web developer, we strongly recommend that you use a plain text editor to learn your primer HTML.

Considerable advances have occurred in recent years in the scientific knowledge of the benefits of breastfeeding, the mechanisms underlying these benefits, and in the clinical management of breastfeeding. This policy statement on breastfeeding replaces the 1997 policy statement of the American Academy of Pediatrics and reflects this newer knowledge and the supporting publications. The list of those responsible for the Rwandan massacre of 1994 continues to grow, and with the release of an explosive report last month, XXX has joined it. To carry out its inquiry, the 52-nation Organization of African Unity (OAU) called on two Torontonians -- former Canadian ambassador to the UN XXX and XXX, former director of CUSO in Nigeria and co-chair of Ontario's Royal Commission on Learning -- together with the past chiefs of state of Botswana and Mali and other notables. Their report (XXX) once again takes the United Nations and some if its member countries to task. But in more detail than has been offered before, it also describes the leading role senior XXX played in the slaughter that took the lives of more than a million people, and the fact that they have since provided protection for perpetrators. For the 5,000 Rwandans living in Canada, the OAU report has increased their estrangement from XXX. XXX has been a key spiritual force, but its adherents are now exiting en masse.
One of them is XXX, a computer programmer who lost two brothers, a brother-in-law, his grandparents and nephews in the genocide.

Are you a “green” translator?

Global warming, climate change and reducing carbon emissions are all burning issues these days. Most of us are very much aware of what we can do to help save the planet from the disastrous consequences of the harm that is being done to the environment, and even making a small contribution can change things for the better. Here are some tips on what we as professionals can do to make a difference:
Saving energy
•Turn off the lights whenever you leave a room for more than ten minutes. Plug office equipment into a power strip with a switch and turn it off when you shut down for the day, go to bed at night or are going to be away for a longer period.
•Use compact fluorescent (or carbon free) light bulbs (CFLs). CFLs use only one third of the electricity consumed by an ordinary incandescent light bulb and last up to ten times longer. Although they may seem expensive initially, you save both money and energy in the long run and it is definitely a more environment friendly option.
•Think about using and/or promoting renewable and alternative energy resources. Installing solar energy panels on your roof is one option, for example. This is still more expensive than conventional sources of energy, but even if you install panels for electricity supply to just one room in your house, you would be making a small contribution towards reducing the use of fossil fuels and other conventional energy resources that cause carbon emissions, climate change and depletion of natural resources.
Paper and paper products
Recycling and reusing paper can contribute towards less air pollution and saves trees, water and energy. Here’s what you can do:
•Use chlorine-free paper. This may now seem obvious to people in many countries, but there are still places in the world where use of chlorine-free paper is not yet that common. Chlorine bleaching paper mills emit toxic chemicals that can pollute lakes, rivers and other water bodies, harming animals and ecosystems. Manufacturing of chlorine-free paper, however, does not use chlorine or chlorine compounds.
•Avoid taking print-outs and using hard copies of documents wherever possible. Print on both sides of the paper. Paper that has been printed on one side only can be used to receive incoming faxes or for taking print-outs of translations that you are going to proofread.
•Try and use online resources as much as possible, instead of having paper versions mailed to you. This applies to catalogues, brochures and other marketing materials. Sell your own services online too, rather than sending out applications by post.
•You can cut scraps of paper, botched up print-outs and paper from envelopes to one size and staple or bind the pieces of paper together to make small notepads that can be used for jotting down telephone messages or writing to-do and shopping lists. Scraps of paper can also be used in hobbies involving crafts such as collage, paper mache and origami.
Computer recycling and re-use
In India, where I live, it is still very common to re-use old computers and to upgrade, refurbish and repair computers for as long as possible. However, I know that there are some countries in the world where old computers are very often just thrown away, which has led to “mountains” of computers, mobile phones and other electronic devices in landfills and dumping grounds. When they are disposed of in this way, the components computers are made of can leave toxins in the earth and groundwater, which are again harmful to both humans and other living creatures. Here are some tips on how to dispose of and re-use old computers:
•Upgrade and repair your computer for as long as possible. Fortunately, as translators we only work with text and don’t have to use some of the complex software and equipment people in other professions do. Only buy a new computer when it is absolutely necessary.
•Laptops are more energy efficient than PCs. Here again, a translator can do his/her work quite comfortably on a laptop.
•When you buy a new computer you can still use your old computer as a family computer for playing games, watching movies, family web surfing and e-mailing and children’s homework and school projects.
•Donate your old computer to schools, community centres and NGOs. If you search the web, you will find that many NGOs now run computer training programs for the less privileged and would be happy to accept used computers.
•Do your homework before you buy a new computer. Computer companies, such as Dell, for example, are now looking into computer recycling in a big way, and many of them will take back your old computer when you buy a new one and re-use the parts. Some dealers also take back old computers and will even agree to give you a discount on the new one in exchange.
I’m sure that many of you already do many of these things and are aware of them, but I feel they cannot be emphasised enough. As I said before, even a small step towards reducing your carbon footprint and improving environmental conditions can make a big difference.

Use lâmpadas fluorescentes compactas – elas usam apenas 1/3 da energia consumida por uma lâmpada incandescente comum e duram até 10 vezes mais. Embora possam parecer mais caras no começo, a longo prazo você economiza tanto energia quanto dinheiro e elas são definitivamente uma opção mais amigável no que diz respeito ao meio ambiente.
Pense em usar e/ou divulgar fontes renováveis de energia. Por exemplo, instalar painéis de energia solar no telhado é uma opção. Isto ainda é mais caro que fontes convencionais de energia, mas mesmo que você instale painéis para suprir energia para apenas um cômodo em sua casa, você estará fazendo uma pequena contribuição em direção à redução do uso de combustíveis fósseis e de outras fontes convencionais de energia que causam emissão de carbono, mudanças climáticas e diminuição de recursos naturais.
Papel e produtos feitos de papel
Reciclar e reusar papel pode contribuir para menos poluição do ar e salvar árvores e economizar água e energia. Aqui está o quê você pode fazer:
Use papel sem cloro. Isto pode parecer óbvio para as pessoas em muitos países, mas ainda há lugares no mundo onde o uso de papel sem cloro não é assim tão comum ainda. Ao comprar um computador novos, você ainda pode usar o velho como computador da família para jogos, ver filmes, navegar na Internet e mandar mensagens eletrônicas e fazer o dever de casa das crianças e projetos escolares.
Doe seu computador velho para escolas, centros comunitários e ONGs. Se procurar na Internet, vai descobrir que muitas ONGs rodam programas de treinamento em computador para os menos privilegiados e ficariam felizes em aceitar um computador usado.
Faça seu dever de casa antes de comprar um computador novo. As companhias de computadores, como a Dell, por exemplo, estão agora vendo a reciclagem de computadores em alta escala e muitas delas pegarão seu computador velho de volta quando você compra um novo e reusa as peças. Windows Key:
The Windows key is located between the CTL & ALT keys. A "windows" keyboard is required to apply this shortcuts.
Hold down the "windows" key and press:
M - Minimizes all windows
SHIFT - M - Undo minimize all windows
E - Opens Windows Explorer
D - Switches between minimizing all open programs and showing them all.
F - Opens the Find Window
R - Opens the Run Window
BREAK / PAUSE- Opens System Properties
TAB - Cycles through items on the task bar
Or you can just press the "Windows" key to open the Start menu.

There are a number of ways to boost traffic to your profile for free, with very little effort. This article lists five of them.
If you seek new clients, new contacts, or just an interesting message from a visitor from time to time, it is worth doing a few simple things to increase the number of visits you get to your ProZ.com profile page.
The most powerful ways to boost traffic to your profile are (1) to go platinum and (2) to earn KudoZ points. These two activities have a big impact because... well, because ProZ.com is built to work that way! Being a paying member, and earning KudoZ, causes links to your profile to appear in various (favorable) places throughout the site.
Paid membership and KudoZ participation aside, there are a number of additional ways to boost traffic to your profile for free, with very little effort. Here are seven of them:
1. Enter detailed fields of expertise
This is very important, whether or not you are a member. To be clear: You will not appear in the new directory when a client searches for a detailed field (ie. most of the time), unless you enter detailed fields in your profile. Note that a special form has been provided for the purpose, and unless you have used that form, you will not be recognized as a specialist in a detailed field. (Writing it in, or including it in your CV, is not good enough!)
If you do nothing else after reading this article, at least take five minutes to enter your detailed fields, so that a client who needs a professional with your expertise will be able to find you!

2. Enter a list of keywords (optionally in several languages)
Did you know that there is a box in your profile provided for you to enter keywords related to your expertise, capabilities, services, etc.? Because clients search the ProZ.com directory and the search engines by keyword, the more keywords you enter in your profile, the better your chances of coming up in searches.
One technique to consider for the keyword box is entering your most important keywords in all the languages in which you work. Terms like "traductor" can boost your traffic, too...
