THE RIFT
As he dropped the last grisly fragment of the dismembered and mutilated body into the small vat of nitric acid that was to devour every trace of the horrid evidence which might easily send him to the gallows, the man sank weakly into a chair and throwing his body forward upon his great, teak desk buried his face in his arms, breaking into dry, moaning sobs.
Beads of perspiration followed the seams of his high, wrinkled forehead, replacing the tears which might have lessened the pressure upon his overwrought nerves. His slender frame shook, as with ague, and at times was racked by a convulsive shudder. A sudden step upon the stairway leading to his workshop brought him trembling and wide eyed to his feet, staring fearfully at the locked and bolted door.
Although he knew perfectly well whose the advancing footfalls were, he was all but overcome by the madness of apprehension as they came softly nearer and nearer to the barred door. At last they halted before it, to be followed by a gentle knock.
"Daddy!" came the sweet tones of a girl's voice. The man made an effort to take a firm grasp upon himself that no tell-tale evidence of his emotion might be betrayed in his speech.
"Daddy!" called the girl again, a trace of anxiety in her voice this time. "What IS the matter with you, and what ARE you doing? You've been shut up in that hateful old room for three days now without a morsel to eat, and in all likelihood without a wink of sleep. You'll kill yourself with your stuffy old experiments."
The man's face softened. "Don't worry about me, sweetheart," he replied in a well-controlled voice. "I'll soon be through now—soon be through--and then we'll go away for a long vacation-- for a long vacation."
"I'll give you until noon, Daddy," said the girl in a voice which carried a more strongly defined tone of authority than her father's soft drawl, "and then I shall come into that room, if I have to use an axe, and bring you out--do you understand?"
Professor Maxon smiled wanly. He knew that his daughter was equal to her threat. "All right, sweetheart, I'll be through by noon for sure--by noon for sure. Run along and play now, like a good little girl."
Virginia Maxon shrugged her shapely shoulders and shook her head hopelessly at the forbidding panels of the door. "My dolls are all dressed for the day," she cried, "and I'm tired of making mud pies--I want you to come out and play with me."
But Professor Maxon did not reply--he had returned to view his grim operations, and the hideousness of them had closed his ears to the sweet tones of the girl's voice. As she turned to retrace her steps to the floor below. Miss Maxon still shook her head.
"Poor old Daddy," she mused, "were I a thousand years old, wrinkled and toothless, he would still look upon me as his baby girl."
If you chance to be an alumnus of Cornell you may recall Professor Arthur Maxon, a quiet, slender, white-haired gentleman, who for several years was na assistant professor in one of the departments of natural science. Wealthy by inheritance, he had chosen the field of education for his life work solely from a desire to be of some material benefit to mankind since the meager salary which accompanied his professorship was not of sufficient import to influence him in the slightest degree.
Always keenly interested in biology, his almost unlimited means had permitted him to undertake, in secret, a series of daring experiments which had carried him so far in advance of the biologists of his day that he had, while others were still groping blindly for the secret of life, actually reproduced by chemical means the great phenomenon. Fully alive to the gravity and responsibilities of his marvelous discovery he had kept the results of his experimentation, and even the experiments themselves, a profound secret not only from his colleagues, but from his only daughter, who heretofore had shared his every hope and aspiration.
It was the very success of his last and most pretentious effort that had placed him in the horrifying predicament in which he now found himself--with the corpse of what was apparently a human being in his workshop and no available explanation that could possibly be acceptable to a matter-of-fact and unscientific police. Had he told them the truth they would have laughed at him. Had he said:
"This is not a human being that you see, but the remains of a chemically produced counterfeit created in my own laboratory," they would have smiled, and either hanged him or put him away with the other criminally insane. This phase of the many possibilities which he had realized might be contingent upon even the partial success of his work alone had escaped his consideration, so that the first wave of triumphant exultation with which he had viewed the finished result of this last experiment had been succeeded by overwhelming consternation as he saw the thing which he had created gasp once or twice with the feeble spark of life with which he had endowed it, and expire—leaving upon his hands the corpse of what was, to all intent and purpose, a human being, albeit a most grotesque and misshapen thing.

Enquanto jogava o último fragmento terrível do corpo desmembrado e mutilado na pequena cuba
de ácido nítrico que devoraria todos os vestígios da horrível evidência que poderia facilmente mandalo para a forca, o homem afundou debilmente em uma cadeira e, jogando o corpo para frente sobre a
grande escrivaninha de madeira teca, enterrou o rosto nos braços, e desabou-se em fracos e sonoros
gemidos.
Gotas de suor seguiam as costuras de sua alta e enrugada testa, substituindo as lágrimas que
poderiam ter diminuído a pressão de sua profunda agitação. Sua estrutura esguia tremia, como se
estivesse com febre, assolando-se às vezes por um tremor convulsivo. Um passo repentino na escada
que levava à sua oficina o fez se levantar, trêmulo e com os olhos arregalados, olhando com medo
para a porta trancada com ferrolhos.
Embora soubesse perfeitamente bem de quem eram as pegadas que se aproximavam, ele foi
completamente vencido pela loucura da apreensão à medida que elas se aproximavam suavemente
da porta gradeada. Por fim, o som interrompeu-se diante dela, seguidos por uma batida suave.
"Papai!", era o tom doce da voz de uma menina. O homem fez um esforço para se firmar para ter
certeza de que nenhuma evidência de sua emoção o trairia em sua fala.
"Papai!", gritou a menina novamente, dessa vez com um traço de ansiedade em sua voz. "O que
HÁ de errado com você e o QUE é que você está fazendo? Você tem se trancado nesse quarto velho
e detestável fazem três dias, sem comer nada e, muito provavelmente, sem dormir nada. Você vai se
matar com esses seus experimentos velhos e abafados".
O rosto do homem se suavizou. "Não se preocupe comigo, querida", respondeu ele com uma voz
bem controlada. "Logo eu terei terminado—logo, logo-, e então sairemos para umas longas férias--
umas longas férias."
"Eu dar a você até o meio-dia, papai", disse a garota com uma voz que carregava um tom de
autoridade mais fortemente definido do que a fala suave de seu pai, "e então entrarei nesse quarto,
mesmo se tiver que usar um machado, e te trarei para fora-- você entendeu?
O professor Maxon sorriu sem entusiasmo. Ele sabia que sua filha estava à altura de sua ameaça.
"Muito bem, querida, estarei terminado até meio-dia—com certeza até o meio dia. Vai correr e brincar
agora, como uma boa garotinha."
Virginia Maxon encolheu seus ombros bem torneados e balançou a cabeça desesperançosa
mente para os painéis da porta. "Minhas bonecas estão todas vestidas para o dia", chorou ela, "e eu
estou cansada de fazer tortas de lama-- quero que você saia e brinque comigo".
Mas o Professor Maxon não respondeu - ele havia voltado a observar suas operações sombrias,
e a hediondez delas havia fechado seus ouvidos para o doce tom da voz da garota. Quando ela se
virou para refazer seus passos até o andar de baixo, ela, a Srta. Maxon, ainda balançava a própria
cabeça.
"Pobre papai", ponderou ela, "se eu tivesse mil anos de idade, com rugas e sem dentes, ele ainda
me veria como sua filhinha".
Se por acaso você for um ex-aluno de Cornell, talvez se lembre do Professor Arthur Maxon, um
cavalheiro calmo, magro e de cabelos brancos, que por vários anos foi professor assistente em um
dos departamentos de ciências naturais. Rico por herança, ele havia escolhido o campo da educação
para o trabalho de sua vida apenas pelo desejo de ser de algum benefício material para a humanidade,
já que o magro salário que acompanhava seu cargo de professor não exercia importância suficiente
para influenciá-lo minimamente.
Sempre veemente interessado em biologia, seus recursos quase ilimitados permitiram que ele
empreendesse, em segredo, uma série de experimentos ousados que o levaram tão à frente dos
biólogos de sua época que ele, enquanto outros ainda tateavam às cegas em busca do segredo da
vida, reproduziu de fato, por meios químicos, o grande fenômeno. Totalmente consciente da gravidade
e da responsabilidade de sua maravilhosa descoberta, ele manteve os resultados desse experimento,
e até mesmo o experimento em si, em profundo segredo não apenas de seus colegas, mas também
de sua única filha, que até então compartilhava todas as suas esperanças e aspirações.
Foi o próprio sucesso de seu último e mais pretensioso esforço que o colocou na terrível situação em
que se encontrava agora - com o cadáver do que aparentemente era um ser humano em sua oficina
e nenhuma explicação disponível que pudesse ser aceitável para uma prática e não científica polícia.
Se ele tivesse dito a verdade, eles teriam rido. Se ele tivesse dito:
“Não é um ser humano que vocês veem aqui, mas os restos de uma imitação produzida
quimicamente e criada em meu próprio laboratório”, eles teriam sorrido, e ou o enforcariam ou o
colocariam junto com outros criminosos insanos. Esta fase de muitas possibilidades que ele havia
realizado poderia depender até mesmo do sucesso parcial de seu trabalho por si só, havia escapado
à sua consideração, de modo que a primeira onda de exultação triunfante com a qual ele viu o
resultado final desta última experiência foi sucedida por uma consternação avassaladora ao ver a coisa
que ele havia criado ofegar, uma ou duas vezes ,com a débil centelha de vida com a qual ele a dotou
e expirar - deixando em suas mãos o cadáver do que era, para todos os efeitos, um ser humano,
embora de um modo grotesco e deformado
