“Women’s words are the not the stuff of history.”1 So says Clara Sue Kidwell in her essay, “Indian Women as Cultural Mediators,” in which she compares fact and fiction of lauded Indian women such as Pocahontas and Sacagawea, and bemoans the lack of written testimony. “They did not write their own accounts to analyze their own actions.”2 So she might be right– the words of native women are lost from history. But their actions are largely present. The actions of native women guided the European men whose words can be found today. Native women, often through marriage and child-bearing, wove permanent ties between native and European cultures. And in many cases, the actions of native women led their own people through the most tumultuous moments in their history.
To understand how Native American women interacted with European men, it is important to first understand their role within their own societies. Though this varied from nation to nation as each had, and continue to have, their own unique culture, women in native societies were largely involved in the daily workings of their communities. They were the agriculturists: they planted, harvested, and distributed food.3 Among Algonquian-speaking societies in particular, women grew and harvested crops as well as produced bedding, baskets, fashioned animal skin into clothing, and made other domestic tools critical to life in their community. With their duties balanced through child-rearing and mourning the dead, it is easy to see that women were strongly united with the earth in spirit, their roles anchored in life-giving.4 In her essay on the Anglo-Algonquian gender frontier, Kathleen M. Brown writes, “Lineage wealth and political power passed through the female line, perhaps because of women’s crucial role in producing and
maintaining property.”5

Tensions in Iraq and Lebanon are reaching fever pitch as the US elections draw near and raise the stakes in the Middle East's geopolitical battlegrounds.
In Iraq, a slew of rocket attacks suspected to have been launched by Iran-backed armed groups in recent weeks have prompted US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to threaten a diplomatic pull-out from Baghdad.
In Lebanon, a French initiative to broker a political resolution meant to stave off state collapse may have come to a screeching halt as the country's Saudi-backed politicians lock horns with Iran-backed Hezbollah.
These latest developments raise the specter of disaster in both these countries, according to analysts, and appear linked to the approach of US elections on November 3.
Iraq on the brink
The recent round of rocket assaults in Iraq may have triggered the threat to shutter the US embassy, but they are not a new phenomenon.
"The timing is definitely something we have to look at," Iraq analyst Sajad Jayid told CNN. "Why suddenly is the US talking about closing the embassy when these attacks have been going on since last year?"
Pompeo's warning blindsided the Iraqi government. It came on the heels of a trip by the US-backed Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, to Washington in late August, which was widely viewed as successful.
"On the most important US concern, Kadhimi did not promise to eliminate Iranian influence in Iraq, and Trump did not press him on it. He did not need to," wrote Andrew Peek, former Deputy Secretary of State for Iraq and Iran at the US State Department, in a blog post for the Atlantic Council, a non-partisan think tank.
"The visit itself, and others like it, is much of how the United States competes with Iran in Iraq: through engagements, visits, and other symbolic gestures ... and that is usually good enough for American national-security interests," Peek added.
But amid the latest wave of attacks, one of which killed five members of one family near Baghdad's airport, the White House has upped the ante, pressuring Kadhimi to restrain armed groups allied to Tehran. With Iran-backed parties holding a sizable portion of the country's parliamentary seats, this is a tall order.
"Kadhimi is in a very difficult position. Realistically he can't do much," said Jayid. "He does not have the capability to impose rule of law completely and suddenly go after all of these groups that have been threatening the US."
But the upcoming elections may prompt drastic action. A successful attack on US diplomatic facilities could deal a deadly blow to US President Donald Trump's re-election campaign. Trump may take dramatic steps, said Jayid, including ordering the pull-out of US diplomats, in an effort to avoid a repeat of the 2012 Benghazi attack that killed US ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens.
"It doesn't bode very well for Iraq," said Jayid. "The attacks are not going to stop and I think the Americans are going to have to make a decision.

The latest tensions, analysts say, are reminiscent of the lead-up to the US targeted killing of Iranian top general Qasem Soleimani near Baghdad airport on January 3. The attack seemed to bring the region to the verge of a cataclysmic war, but after Iran retaliated with rounds of ballistic missiles that ravaged some US positions in Baghdad, that geopolitical conflict returned to a low boil.

يتصاعد التوتر في العراق ولبنان الى درجات الغليان بينما يقترب موعد الانتخابات الامريكية ليزيد من خطورة الموقف في ساحة الصراع الجيوسياسي في الشرق الاوسط.
ففي العراق، دفعت سلسلة من الهجمات الصاروخية، يشتبه بان مطلقيها مجموعات مسلحة مدعومة من ايران، دفعت وزير الخارجية مايك بومبيو لان يهدد بانسحاب دبلوماسي من بغداد.
اما في لبنان، فقد تنتهي مبادرة فرنسية، للتوسط في قرار سياسي يجنب البلاد انهيارًا حكوميًا، نهايةً مأساوية جراء صراع السياسيين المدعومين من السعودية مع حزب الله المدعوم من ايران.
وفقًا لمحللين، تزيد هذه التطورات الاخيرة من مخاوف شبح الكارثة في هذين البلدين، ويبدو بانها مرتبطة باقتراب الانتخابات الامريكية في الثالث من نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني.
العراق على حافة الهاوية
رغم انها ليست ظاهرةً جديدةً، لكن قد تكون الهجمات الاخيرة السبب خلف اطلاق تهديد اغلاق السفارة.
"من الجدير التفكر في توقيت هذه الهجمات. فلِمَ تتحدث الولايات المتحدة فجأةً عن غلق سفارتها رغم ان هذه الهجمات لم تتوقف طوال السنة الاخيرة؟" يتساءل المحلل العراقي سجاد جياد في حديثه مع السي أنْ أنْ (CNN).
صدم تحذير بومبيو الحكومة العراقي. فقد جاء بعيد زيارة رئيس الوزراء العراقي المدعوم من الولايات المتحدة، مصطفى الكاظمي الى واشنطن في نهاية اغسطس/آب الماضي، التي رأى الكثيرون انها كانت زيارةً ناجحةً.
"اما بصدد {ايران} السبب الاول في تعكير مزاج الولايات المتحدة،" يكتب النائب السابق وزير الخارجية لشؤون العراق وايران في وزارة الخارجية الامريكية، اندرو بيك، في مقالة للاتلانتك كونسل (Atlantic Council)، مؤسسة فكرية غير حزبية، "ان الكاظمي لم يعطِ وعدًا لإنهاء على التأثير الايراني في العراق، ولم يضغط ترمب عليه لفعل ذلك. {لان الاخير} لم يحتج لذلك."
يضيف بيك "ان الزيارة نفسها، ومثيلاتها، ترينا اسلوب الولايات المتحدة الذي تتنافس به مع ايران في العراق، عن طريق اللقاءات والزيارات و المبادرات الرمزية الاخرى ... وهذا غالبًا جيدٌ بما فيه الكفاية للامن الوطني الامريكي."
لكن في خضم الموجة الاخيرة من الهجمات، التي اودى احدها بحياة خمسة افراد من عائلة قرب مطار بغداد، رفع البيت الابيض من حدة الخطاب، ضاغطًا على الكاظمي لتقييد المجاميع المسلحة التابعة لطهران. لكن بوجود احزاب مدعومة من ايران تهيمن على عدد كبير من مقاعد برلمان العراق، تبقى هذه المهمة مهمة عصية.
يصف جياد موقف الكاظمي بالعصيب. وان يديه مكتوفتان، لانه "لا يمتلك القدرة على بسط سلطة القانون ولا يمكنه فجأة ان يلاحق كل المجاميع التي كانت وما زالت تهدد الولايات المتحدة."
ويظن المحلل السياسي ان الانتخابات الامريكية القادمة قد تدفع باجراءات صارمة. فهجمةٌ ناجحة على البعثات الدبلوماسية الامريكية من شأنها ان توجه لكمةً قاتلة لحملة الرئيس الامريكي دونالد ترمب الانتخابية للفوز بولاية ثانية. قد يخطي ترامب خطوات مفاجئة، يضيف جياد، فقد يوجه الاخير بسحب البعثات الدبلوماسية الامريكية سعيًا منه لتنجنب تكرار هجمة بنغازي في 2012 التي قُتِلَ فيها السفير الامريكي في ليبيا، جي كرستوفر ستيفنز.
ويعتقد جياد ان "هذه الهجمات نذير شر للعراق،" وانها "لن تتوقف، وسيتوجب على الامريكيين اتخاذ قرار حيالها."
"هل يمضون بتهديداتهم ويغلقون السفارة؟ ام يستجيبون لهذه الهجمات إن ايقنوا ان الحكومة العراقية عاجزة؟ وبذلك نعود كرة اخرى الى دائرة العنف."
يقول محللون ان التوترات الاخيرة تُذكِرُ بالتصعيد الذي جعلته الولايات المتحدة تمهيدًا لاستهدافها الجنرال الايراني قاسم سليماني قرب مطار بغداد في الثالث من كانون الثاني/يناير الماضي. بدا الامر ان الهجوم قد اخذ المنطقة الى حرب ضروس، لكن بعد ان ردت ايران بعشرات من الصواريخ البالستية التي دمرت بعض القواعد الامريكية في بغداد، هدأ الصراع الجيوسياسي.
