English to Italian: The Liberal Arts Studiolo From The Ducal Palace at Gubbio Detailed field: Architecture
Source text - English THE PANELING
The first impression of the Gubbio studiolo experienced by the Museum visitor is that of having entered a total environment: a space unified by the warm tone of the woods, the aggressive geometry of its intricately designed panels, and the subtly controlled lighting streaming from its three windows.
Around all four sides of the room the panels are divided by illusionistic fluted pilasters capped by composite capitals that support an entablature and flank cabinets with latticed doors variously ajar. Each cabinet is surrounded by a flat guilloche frame, except for the two on the sides of the main window whose borders display an intriguing design of wooden disks shown in perspective. Below the cabinets and separated from them by a frieze of emblems and devices, we see a continuous fictive bench supported by balausters; some of the seats are raised to reveal their underside decoration of flat ornamental inlay; behind the balausters simulated latticed panels run along the bottom of the wall.
To achieve the variety of effects called for by the complexity of this design, two different techniques were employed. One was a traditional type of wood inlay, which- with some variants- was used for realizing decorative borders, ornamental panels, and flat designs such as emblems and devices. The other was the celebrated Florentine Renaissance technique of perspective intarsia, which in the paneling of the Gubbio studiolo reaches one of its most perfect expressions.

La prima sensazione che si ha visitando lo studiolo di Gubbio, è di trovarsi in un ambiente unitario, completo: in uno spazio che il tono caldo del legno, la decisa geometria delle tarsie lignee e l'abile disposizione della luce proveviente dalle tre finestre, rendono unito.
Su tutti e quattro i lati della stanza le tarsie lignee sono divise da illusionistiche lesene scanalate, sormontate da capitelli composti che sostengono la trabeazione, poste a lati di armadi le cui ante, a grata, sono variamente socchiuse. Ogni armadio è caratterizzato da una cornice a meandri, salvo i due collocati ai lati della finestra principale, i cui contorni presentano un disegno interessante: dei dischi di legno posti in modo prospettico. Dei finti sedili, sostenuti da balaustri, sono visibili al di sotto degli armadi dai quali sono separati grazie ad un fregio in cui sono raffigurati stemmi ed emblemi. Alcuni sedili sono sollevati per mostrare gli intarsi ornamentali che decorano la loro superficie sottostante; dietro i balaustri, lungo tutta la parte inferiore della parete, sono visibili delle finte grate.
Per realizzare la varietà di effetti che la complessità del progetto richiedeva, furono impiegate due diverse tecniche. Quella che con alcune varianti veniva utilizzata per realizzare cornici decorate, pannelli ornamentali e disegni senza rilievo, come stemmi ed emblemi, rispondeva al tipo tradizionale di intarsio ligneo. L'altra tecnica consisteva nella famosa tecnica rinascimentale fiorentina di intarsio in prospettiva che raggiunse una delle espressioni più perfette proprio nelle tarsie lignee dello studiolo di Gubbio.
