pointers of deviation from [maximal] {radio/course} course signal zone
Operating notes in taking bearings.-a. The next most general use of the radio compass is taking bearings on surface transmissions. Except when very close to the transmitting station, the minimum or null is not sufficiently sharp to read. There may be several degrees through which, as the loop is turned, the signal volume is either inaudible or a minimum. This inaudible zone is usually known as the, split. In this case the loop is turned in both directions, just beyond the minimum zone, where the signal intensity is judged to be equal. With a little practice, these two points of equal signal intensity can be judged quite accurately. The middle point of this split is then used as the observed bearing
