Decidi não utilizar o Pretérito Perfeito simples, porque no Presente do Indicativo a frase consegue proporcionar a idéia da progressão da doença e duma certa forma, completa o que ele/ela acabou de dizer na primeira frase: "D'altra parte, per me diventa sempre più difficile scrivere le e-mail. La malattia penetra nelle mie mani come il freddo dell’inverno ..."

O sentido de "com o frio do inverno" é-me claro e é o mesmo em Portugal.
Vou acrescentar aqui algumas soluções possíveis:
...la malattia si è propagata alle mie mani
... la malattia ha colpito le mie mani
... le mie mani sono state colpite dalla malattia

"COM o frio do inverno" ou seja, 'DEVIDO ao frio do inverno, a minha doença chegou/alcançou/atacou as minhas mãos"
Não sei a que doença ele se refere, mas suponho que seja uma artrite, reumatismo,... ou algo do gênero.
Talvez esta forma de expressão seja brasileira, não sei, mas ela é freqüente aqui, e tem este sentido; quanto a isso, não tenho dúvidas.
