Project Overview
XXX (XXX fully understands CFE strategic need to free space in the spent fuel pool to allow for the temporary storage of used fuel. While there are a variety of ways to meet this goal, only one truly allows for the maximum impact for enhanced storage space – removal of the control rod blades and associated irradiated hardware from the pools.
This goal has been accomplished at many of the US nuclear power plants by removing the velocity limiters and stellite roller bearing from the Control Rod Blade (CRB) and compacting the CRB. Once compacted, the CRBs are packaged in a large long-term storage container, transferred to an applicable alternate location outside of the reactor building and stored in a specially designed Horizontal Shielded Concrete Module. This eliminates the need to design and install a special CRB rack for future storage of CRBs, reduces pool radiation dose, eliminates plant modifications required and allows for increased used fuel storage in the pools.
