La idea de Gaia, como tal, pone de cabeza la noción panglosiana de Voltaire. No es que el hombre (i.e. la vida) haya heredado el mejor de los mundos posibles, sino que la vida ha generado el mejor de los mundos posibles. Y sin duda la idea de Gaia también se opone en forma contundente a la teoría estereotipada (???) ticker-tape notion del “gen egoísta”, según la cual la vida lucha contra la vida mediante mutaciones ventajosas para heredar la “Tierra”
