English term

to flare

English to Dutch Tech/Engineering Physics optics
I am puzzled by the following sentence that makes up a claim of a patent concerning an optical recording apparatus...

The optical pickup apparatus....wherein when recording and/or reproducing information is conducted for the third optical disk, a spherical aberration of a light flux having passed through a region of the objective lens having a numerical aperture that is larger than NA3, is made to flare on the third optical disk.

It is the use of the verb "to flare" that puts me off. Does this mean here that the aberration will be depicted on the third optical disk in the form of for example a dot, or that it will be reflected on the surface of that disk.

The description of the patent doesn't give any extra clues....

Thanks in advance for thinking along!

Chambers Dictionary of Science and Technology:

flare (image technology) = "Scattering of light within an optical system, such as a camera lens; it produces unwanted exposure, unrelated to the required image, and may appear as a patch of light or as an overall haze, reducing the effective tonal range".

flare factor (image technology) = "Ratio between the luminance scale of the subject and that of the camera image".

branden

Ik kende flare als (af)fakkelen., dus ik dacht al aan vuur.
En wat zegt Van Dale?

flare5 (overgankelijk werkwoord) vergelijk flared
1
doen flakkeren
doen flikkeren / vlammen / schitteren
2
met vuursignalen (over)seinen
3
opensperren

Betekenis 2 lijkt hier letterlijk van toepassing :-)
