This question is about the proper use of the hyphen in cases where there is a a registered trademark symbol or similar involved.

I am not aware of any exceptions to the rule that requires the use of the hyphen between the compound adjective and the noun it modifies when the compound adjective includes a registered trademark symbol.

It does look a bit strange visually with the hyphen after the superscript symbol.

Your input is much appreciated.

Yes Tony I did almost mention the US-UK difference regarding hyphens.
Tony M Sep 23, 2021:
@ Asker I agree that the hyphen should be retained, even in presence of a preceding symbol.
However, do note the increasing tendency in EN-US in particualr to leave out such hyphens anyway (regardless of symbols etc.), which I think is very unhelpful in terms of comprehension!

Allegro We had this discussion recently, but...

Use of a trademark symbol in the first prominent mention of a trademark (e.g., in a heading) is more important than repeated use throughout a brochure or web page. The symbol does not have to be used every time the mark is used. Instead, use the symbol in the first instance the mark is used, in the most prominent use of the mark, or both. Repeated use of trademark symbols can become cluttered.

@ Phil "you only need to include the trademark symbol the first time the name is mentioned". I diasgree strongly; the symbol should appear in the translation exactly as it does in the source text.

Don't forget that you only need to include the trademark symbol the first time the name is mentioned. Personally I think it would look odd to leave out the hyphen.

28 Apr 2018 — I do not claim ownership of any datsun- or nissan related trademarks which are subject to their respective trademark holders.

I do not think the ® symbol has any impact on this personally

There are some rules on hypens here:

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : I never use a hyphen nor a space, I treat it the same way as a footnote.

change kerning

Hi George,

Which tool are you using? If you're on InDesign or a similar designing software, you may want to tighten the space between the superscripted ® and the hyphenation, which is called kerning.

neutral AllegroTrans : I don't see how that answers the question about hyphen use

I offered this option because the reason that it looks weird is the extra spacing that appears between the superscripted ® and the hyphenation.
