English to Portuguese: An Ideal Husband General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English LORD GORING. [Rising from his chair.] I was waiting for you to say
that, Robert. It is the only thing to do now. And you must begin by
telling your wife the whole story.
SIR ROBERT CHILTERN. That I will not do.
LORD GORING. Robert, believe me, you are wrong.
SIR ROBERT CHILTERN. I couldn't do it. It would kill her love for
me. And now about this woman, this Mrs. Cheveley. How can I defend
myself against her? You knew her before, Arthur, apparently.
LORD GORING. Yes.
SIR ROBERT CHILTERN. Did you know her well?
LORD GORING. [Arranging his necktie.] So little that I got engaged
to be married to her once, when I was staying at the Tenbys'. The
affair lasted for three days . . . nearly.
SIR ROBERT CHILTERN. Why was it broken off?
LORD GORING. [Airily.] Oh, I forget. At least, it makes no matter.
By the way, have you tried her with money? She used to be
confoundedly fond of money.
SIR ROBERT CHILTERN. I offered her any sum she wanted. She refused.
LORD GORING. Then the marvellous gospel of gold breaks down
sometimes. The rich can't do everything, after all.
Translation - Portuguese LORDE GORING. [Levantando da cadeira] Estava esperando que dissesse isso, Robert. É a única coisa a se fazer agora. E você deve começar por contar a sua esposa.
SR ROBERT CHILTERN. Isso eu não farei.
LORDE GORING. Robert, confie em mim, você está errado.
SR ROBERT CHILTERN. Eu não conseguiria fazer isso. Mataria o amor dela por mim. E sobre esta mulher, esta Sra. Cheveley. Como poderei me defender dela? Você a conheceu antes, Arthur, aparentemente.
LORDE GORING. Sim.
SR ROBERT CHILTERN. Você a conhecia bem?
LORDE GORING. [Ajeitando o nó da gravata] Conheci-a tão pouco que quase casei-me com ela, enquanto estava morando nos Tenbys. O caso durou por quase... três dias.
SR ROBERT CHILTERN. Por que o noivado foi desfeito?
LORDE GORING. Ah, eu esqueci. Ao menos, não é importante. Por acaso você tentou suborná-la? Ela costumava ser demasiadamente apaixonada por dinheiro.
SR ROBERT CHILTERN. Eu ofereci qualquer quantidade que ela quisesse. Ela recusou.
LORDE GORING. Então, o maravilhoso evangelho do ouro não funciona sempre. Os ricos não podem tudo, afinal.
