Writing well is an important skill to develop in today’s business environment. A number of jobs require a significant amount of writing (e.g., attorneys, engineers, copywriters, customer service professionals who respond to emails, etc.). Consider the fact that much (if not most) business communication is done through email.
On the other hand, doctors are one group of professionals who are unlikely to use email regularly in the course of business. We could add to that list professional athletes, construction workers, and librarians. However, even in the case of doctors, it’s possible they may email a nurse or conduct a small degree of business communication through email…
CONSIDER:
In both examples, the topic of the first paragraph is the following: writing well is an important skill to develop in today’s business environment. Every statement which follows thereafter must support that topic.
Consider the following sentence from the first example: “…much (if not most) business communication is done through email. ”
This statement certainly supports the topic of the first paragraph (that writing well is an important skill to develop in today’s business environment). However, immediately after that statement, the paragraph veers off-topic. It goes into a discussion about the types of jobs that do not involve using email. In doing so, it moves the reader further and further away from the paragraph’s original focus.

Additionally, the beginning of the text discussed the importance of carefully choosing a website design company. In the next paragraph, the author discussed the issue of website content. However, after bringing up this new issue of website content, the author returned to the topic of website design in the next sentence.
All statements regarding the topic of website design should have been presented together. The topic of website design should not be discussed in one paragraph, disregarded, then mentioned again at another point.
