Hi all, I work in a small language department of a big IT-company in fashion industry. As the company wants to grow internationally, we need to create the whole translation chain within the company. At the moment we are a team of two translators, translating mainly into English (and sometimes into French). So I was wondering if somebody could share experience about which CAT tool is the best one (at price-quality level) for our department at this stage. We need to work on two different devices at the same time and to be able to share and update TMs and Glossaries simultaneously (it would be great to be able also to share the TMs and Glossaries with the whole company in read-only mode). Thank you!Collapse

Are you open to cloud? Jul 11, 2018

If you are open to using a cloud solution, I would recommend SmartCat. The company can create an account for the translation department and each of you can have a user account with different levels of access. You can create and manage glossaries and TMs and if you can invite your translators to use the platform to translate the files. It's worth a try because it's free.

Some of my customers (fashion and food industry) use XTM. It’s quite easy to use unless your text is full of bold, italic, underline, etc. (these codes tend to slow the process). You can try it for free for 30 days (https://xtm.cloud/)

Good luck!

Free TM Jul 12, 2018

Another free one is Wordfast Anywhere: wee.freetm.com

It allows you to share TMs and glossaries as well allows non-translators on your team to access glossaries or the TM (for concordance searches) in read-only mode.

Best,
John

All these cloud-based options are good and free of charge (usually). The only issue is that all your translations will be accessed by other people that has no real responsibility for keeping them safe.
The only "really safe" option is server-based CAT tool, such as MemoQ or DejaVu, when the server will be installed in your office. But server-based versions are expensive.
We are using the stand-alone versions and exchange TM files through network folders. Archaic for sure. But it work

OmegaT is free (as in beer and as in speech), and include team projects. If you use a Subversion server, you can have read-only users in addition to read/write users.
