Chapter 1
Badger moaned loudly and turned over in the bed. Square rooms were not supposed to spin like this and if it didn’t stop soon, he was going to have to kindly request that he be allowed to get off. It wouldn’t be considered the most auspicious of starts to an explorer’s adventure in a future biography to have become unbearably seasick on the short crossing from England to France. He couldn’t even claim it had been stormy weather and choppy seas. It had been sunny, windless and as calm as a duck on a glassy pond. His fellow passengers had been extremely kind despite his constant projectile vomiting, and a nice lady had been sweet enough to hose him down several times which gave some brief respite. He wasn’t entirely sure how he had arrived at his guesthouse in Paris and merely hoped he hadn’t been robbed blind. He focused on the corner of the room where his leather satchel sat looking unmolested and felt a tiny bit of relief that it had arrived with him. The energy of forcing his pupil to focus caused a blinding pain in his left temple and his bowels trembled dangerously again. What can one do in a state like that but moan to the gods? Suddenly the door to the room opened matter-of-factly, and a figure bustled in. It moved to the bedside table and seemed to lay down a tray. Badger tried to look over at the person and saw a stockinged ankle, which would have been thrilling if he didn’t smell of the contents of his stomach. ‘Eh bien maintenant, Monsieur de Setterly. Vous vous sentez mieux?’ The voice was definitely female and unmistakably foreign. Badger forced his brain to open a cupboard somewhere labelled foreign languages but only managed to let out a low moan in a vaguely Gallic way. He was beginning to hope she was the angel of death and could help him on to a speedy demise if this was what life abroad felt like. ‘Well, if you prefer, I can speak the English’, she said kindly, ‘and now I am sorry, but I am ‘aving to give you the…comment je peux dire? The prick in the ass? Lie still and think of Angleterre’. He felt his trousers being yanked down and a sharp needle pierce his buttock cheek. He attempted to scream but settled for throwing up over the side of the bed. ‘Oh dear’, came the voice. ‘I think you still have more to…chuck…so I will leave you for now. Sweet dreams’. Her sensible shoes padded to the door and closed it. Badger decided to stop caring for now and passed out.
