부산국제영화제의 뉴 커런츠는 지난 15년간 아시아의 새로운 재능 발굴의 산실로 자리매김해왔다. 그리고, 뉴 커런츠를 통해 소개된 많은 감독들은 이제 아시아를 너머 세계무대에서 자신의 이름을 분명하게 각인시키는 활발한 작품 활동을 펼쳐 보이고 있다.
올해 역시 뉴 커런츠 는 미래 아시아영화, 세계영화의 주역이 될 뛰어난 신인감독들의 작품을 세계 최초, 또는 해외 최초로 대거 선보인다. 동아시아에서 서아시아, 남아시아에 이르기까지 폭넓은 지역에서 초청된 총 12개국 13편의 작품들은 다양한 주제만큼이나 새롭고 놀라운 시도를 선보인다. 특히, 올해 동남아시아는 뛰어난 수작들이 넘쳐나는, 반드시 주목해야 하는 지역이다.
올해 뉴 커런츠의 젊은 감독들에게 ‘귀환’은 매우 의미있는 테마이다. 해체된 가족관계의 복원, 고향으로의 복귀 등과 같은 ‘귀환’의 테마는 사실주의적 스타일로 표현되고 있다. 미디 지 Midi Z 의 (대만/미얀마)과 통퐁 찬타랑쿤 Tongpong Chantarangkul 의 (태국)는 긴 여정을 통해 현실을 자각하기도 하고, 가족간의 사랑을 재확인하기도 한다. 특히, 의 경우 현실적인 여러 제약에도 불구하고 미얀마의 현실을 날 것 그대로 카메라에 담아내고 있어 그 의미가 각별하다. 가오지펑 Gao Zipeng 의 (중국)는 미완의 귀환을 이야기한다. 산 속에서 실종된 친구를 간절히 찾지만, 각자 자신의 일상으로 돌아가야 하는 사람들의 이야기를 그리고 있다. 반면, 시우 팜 Siu Pham 의 (베트남)는 바다에 빠져 죽은 중년의 남자가 살아 돌아와 벌이는 소동을 그린 한 편의 부조리극과도 같은 작품이다.
‘소외’에 대한 새로운 해석도 흥미롭다. 모르테자 파르샤바프 Morteza Farshbaf 의 (이란)은 농아인 부모와 아들 사이에서 생겨나는 갈등과 소외를 그린 로드무비이며, 히토시 기타가와 Hitoshi Kitagawa 의 (일본)는 집단 속의 소외가 빚어내는 비극을 그린 작품이다. 이들 두 작품의 이야기 구조는 지극히 단순하지만, 오히려 강렬한 메시지를 전달하는 데에 매우 효과적인 역할을 하고 있다. 아루나 자야와르다나 Aruna Jayawardana 의 (스리랑카)는 직업 때문에 주변으로부터 따돌림을 당하는 여성 장의사의 삶을 통해 삶과 죽음의 의미, 인간의 근원적 외로움을 이야기하는 작품이다.
‘가족’과 ‘성장’에 관한 이야기 역시 보편적이지만, 아시아의 젊은 감독들에게는 새로운 해석과 의미부여를 위한 도전이기도 하다. 로이 아크레나스 Loy Acrenas 의 (필리핀)는 탐욕으로 인해 가족관계가 어떻게 해체되는가를 이야기하고 있으며, 김중현감독의 (한국) 역시 ‘가족 붕괴’에 관한 처절한 초상화이다. 가족 붕괴의 주범인 엄마로 인해 도저히 감내키 불가능할 성장통을 치러야만 하는 아들의 이야기를 담고 있다. 망게쉬 하다왈레 Mangesh Hadawale 의 (인도)는 ‘가족간의 사랑과 희생’이라는 전통적인 이야기를 하고 있지만, 부패한 사회를 풍자하고 있기도 하다. 린슈유 Tom Shuyu Lin 의 (대만)과 카밀라 안디니 Kamila Andini 의 (인도네시아)는 꿈과 추억을 간직한 채 성장해가는
소녀에 관한 성장영화이다.
마지막으로, 신인감독으로는 보기 드물게 저예산 시대극에 도전한 박영철 감독의 (한국)은 실존인물 최제우의 일대기를 그린 작품으로 놀라운 미학적 성취를 이룬 작품이다.
이처럼 다양하고 풍성한 아시아 신인감독들의 데뷔작들을 올해 부산국제영화제 뉴 커런츠에서 만날 수 있다. 2011년 부산국제영화제의 뉴 커런츠는 새로운 아시아영화의 도래를 알리는 시발점이 될 것이다.
Translation - English New Currents section of this year’s Busan International Film Festival is once again introducing up-and-coming Asians directors, the potential leaders of the global film industry, as the world premiere or the international premiere. From East Asia to West Asia to South Asia, 13 movies from 12 countries display refreshing and amazing aesthetics dealing with a variety of notions such as homecoming, alienation and coming of age. Southeast Asia, in particular, is the region where we should pay special attention to, for it has produced outstandingly excellent pieces this year.
Busan International Film Festival has been establishing itself as the birthplace of discovering new Asian talents for the past 15 years. By being introduced through New Currents, numerous directors have since been active in producing cinematic works that clearly imprint their names in the global film industry. New Currents this year once again showcases international, if not global, premiers of works of up-and-coming directors who surely will take the lead of Asian and global film industry. From East Asia to West Asia to South Asia, 13 movies from 12 countries display refreshing and amazing aesthetics dealing with a variety of topics such as homecoming, alienation and coming of age. Southeast Asia, in particular, is the region where we should pay special attention to, for it has produced outstandingly excellent pieces this year.
‘Homecoming’ is a very meaning theme for New Currents’ young directors this year. Themes like reassembling broken family and returning to hometown have been expressed through realistic style. Midi Z’s Return to Burma from a Taiwanese and Burmese collaborative production and Tongpong Chantarangul’s I Carried You Home from Thailand reflect on reality through long journeys and reaffirm familial affection. Especially, Return to Burma captures the raw reality of the country formerly known as Myanmar in spite of many realistic restrictions. Gao Zipeng’s Lost in Mountain from China tells a story of homecoming that is not quite complete. It portrays characters who have no choice but to go back to their own reality after desperately trying to find a friend lost in the mountain. On the other hand, Siu Pham’s Here or There from Vietnam describes absurdity of the situation where a middle-aged man, diseased of drowning, comes back to life.
New interpretations of ‘alienation’ are also interesting. Morteza Farshbaf’s Mourning from Iran is a road movie about conflict and alienation between a son and deaf parents. Japan’s Damn Life by Hitoshi Kitagawa is a tragedy stemmed from alienation within group. The storyline of the two films are sorely simple, but that is what makes them so effective in conveying a strong message. Aruna Jayawardana’s August Drizzle from Sri Lanka portrays a life of a female mortician discussing the fundamental loneliness that all human beings experience.
Although the themes of ‘family’ and ‘coming of age’ are also bromides, but they exist as challenges for young Asian directors in terms of interpreting them in fresh points of view and assigning their own meanings. Loy Acrenas’ Nino from the Philippines narrates the destruction of a family due to greed. The movie is about a son who must go through the undeserving pain of growing up all because of his mother, the cause of the destruction of the family. The Indian movie, Mangesh Hadawale’s Indian Circus discusses a traditional story, and yet, satirically mocks the corrupt society. Tom Shuyu Lin’s Starry Starry Night from Taiwan and Kamila Andini’s The Mirror Never Lies from Indonesia are coming of age films about girls who grow up as they manage to maintain memories and dreams in their heart.
Lastly, PARK Young Chul’s from South Korea has successfully accomplished in chronicling the true story of the life of CHOI Jae Woo with wonderful aesthetics. It is a wonderful aesthetical accomplishment coming from a new director who took on the challenge of creating a low-budget historical drama.
As you can see, Busan International Film Festival’s New Currents offers a various and rich pool of debut works created by new promising Asian directors. The starting point for measuring the progress of the new Asian films starts from 2011 Busan International Film Festival.
