Hong Kong Island

Too many people –visitors and residents alike—Hong Kong island is Hong Kong. Seized by the British in 1841, the colony coalesced around the island’s enormous north shore harbour (the name “Hong Kong” approximates the Cantonese Heung Gang, or “Fragrant Harbour”) and created its initial wealth here, despite contemporary disappointment that all Britain had grabbed was a barren rock just 15km broad and 11km long. Here, the rich, industrious, and influential carried on their business, building warehouses, offices and housing, in support of which communications, roads, and transport developed as best they could. The island still doesn’t look planned, though it has taken a kind of mad, organizational genius to fit buildings into the space allowed by the terrain. First impressions are of an organic mass of concrete and glass, stretching back from the water to the encroaching green hills behind. This is Central, the economic hub of the island and territory, whose streets hold as tightly constructed a grouping of buildings as can be imagined: there’s little available space to drive or even walk at ground level, and the only way left to build is up.

For a rendezvous with my emigrated brother,
or for the lure of America's West Coast, sometimes
I cut the chignon of my elder mother-in-law
who was peeping through the door of the other world

The plane takes off appeasing its roar
is it able to fly lightly
because it can shake its grudge off?
Inside a cramped airplane like a cave,
like a silkworm confined to its own body with silk spun from inside
I wanted to be transcendental.

On the screen displaying altitude, velocity, and present location,
my small motherland grew distant.
Dot, dot, dot, ......
Passing over the wide and blue Pacific ocean, my eyes
were hesitating around the date line.

Was it the date line?
What prevented words between a brother and a sister was,
in this global village, coming and going on a thirteen-hour flight
after turning the short hand on my watch
changing here to there, today to tomorrow.
Was it the date line?

Nothing can be changed
at the heart's
date line,
thinking about my mother-in-law coming and going between this world and the other,
my blackened mind
pitted like a cave.
